Pool career scratched

By LOUIS B. HOBSON

Six years ago, Michael Vartan had to choose between being a professional pool player and an actor.

"I was actually quite good and I loved the carefree lifestyle," says Vartan, who plays Drew Barrymore's love interest in Never Been Kissed.

"My acting career was essentially going nowhere because I always seemed to be off playing pool when the auditions came up."

Vartan got a rude awakening one day. "My tutor was ranked eighth in the world. I always had to pick him up for lessons because he couldn't afford a car. It finally dawned on me there is no real future in being a professional pool player."

Vartan traded in his pool cue for a hockey stick.

"I drive my agent and manager wild. I play hockey on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, so I'm not available for auditions on those mornings. I only forfeit my hockey games if I'm actually working on a film, not trying to get one."
