It's Hard to Measure Love in the Afternoon
by Candace Havens
Where is the love?
A glance at the prime-time TV listings show a plethora of action
adventure shows, intense dramas and silly comedies, but there is
little in the way of passion and romance.
Since the departure of the prime-time soap operas "Dallas," "Dynasty"
and "Melrose Place," to name a few, there hasn't been much in the way
of love on network television. The last truly romantic couple was
Lily and Rick Sammler (Sela Ward and Billy Campbell) on ABC's "Once
and Again," which was cancelled last spring.
There was a moment in ABC's "Alias" when superspy Sydney Bristow
(Jennifer Garner) tried to have a romantic dinner with her CIA
handler, Michael Vaughn (Michael Vartan), but a bunch of bad guys
came in with guns and blew that scene to shreds. Luckily, they've
gotten to get a little more up close and personal since the Super
Bowl.
The WB's "Smallville" and "Gilmore Girls" flirt with young love, and
reality television tries to force the issue on a weekly basis, but
there's only one place to find intense passion and romance: daytime
television.
