Directors Bonus-Track Fans

Television series creator J.J. Abrams said when he was shooting the pilot for his series "Alias" a couple of years ago, a friend filmed the shoot just for posterity.

"We joked at the time that this would be on the DVD. Now it is," he said.

The first season of "Alias," which details the travails of spy Sydney Bristow, will be released Sept. 2.

Among the possible bonus features are a gag reel, deleted scenes, a gadget gallery, inside stunts and numerous commentaries. Abrams said he is a big fan of added features, both as a viewer and a producer.

"I love getting the added features. They let you gain insight into the experience of making the film or series," he said. "With DVDs becoming ubiquitous, the added features are very common."

He believes bonus features are even more appropriate for television series, now that entire seasons are being captured in box sets comprised of a half dozen or so discs.

"To me, it's not a question of what might sell or help sales," he said. "It's about what would I want to see on the DVD. Obviously, if you're a fan of the show, seeing the actors in a gag reel after someone flubs a line or something goes wrong, is fun to see."
