TV Gal Takes Comfort in Old Friends
By Amy Amatangelo
All I've been doing lately is talking about the new series, but let's take a moment to show a little love for the returning series that are having great seasons:
"Alias" (ABC, 9 p.m. Sunday): I know this season has divided many fans. And there have been some problems -- they took way too long to explain Lauren's (Melissa George) accent (and even her little speech last week about growing up in London seemed like an afterthought to placate viewers). I know this is a series where you have to suspend disbelief, but lately I've felt like I've had to chuck my disbelief out the window. Two years ago Dixon was working for SD-6, now he's a director in the CIA. Sydney wakes up after a two-year brain blip, and she's already jet-setting around the world. Vaughn is lying in the hospital bed in a coma, and three weeks later he's playing hockey and has no visible scar. I mean, I'm all for a shirtless Michael Vartan, and I'm no doctor, but shouldn't there have been stitches or something where Sydney stabbed him? Or has medical technology improved that much in two years?
But really, I quibble. Because each week, I'm at the edge of my seat throughout the entire episode. I can't even bear the thought of taping an episode and watching it later. I must watch it live. Even with her preposterous surroundings, Jennifer Garner always portrays a completely believable character. Whether she's tearfully watching Lauren comfort Vaughn or listening to him explain how he doesn't regret moving on, I never doubt her authenticity. And I have to say I kind of like Lauren. Not that I want her with Vaughn, but I like what she's brought to the series -- a legitimate reason for Vaughn and Sydney to be apart -- and clearly, we don't know all there is to know about her character.
