'Alias' brings back Evil Francie and Will
by Robert Bianco
Sydney is about to run into two wayward friends.
The Alias mini-reunion kicks off with an episode slated for the November sweeps, as Merrin Dungey returns as Francie's evil double. A few weeks later, Bradley Cooper reappears as Will, who's been hiding in witness protection ever since Evil Francie tried to kill him. Turns out Sydney needs him for a mission, so she tracks him down.
''We're using both of those actors in a way that is their best,'' says Alias' clever creator J.J. Abrams. ''We're throwing them back into Sydney's life when it's at its most insane.''
Insane is putting it mildly. When last we saw Sydney, she was stabbing her ex-lover, Vaughn, a plot twist tied to her search for the missing two years of her life. ''The attempt this year was to try to reset the world, and then shatter it.''
If the reset has left you confused, Abrams says help is on the way -- and sooner than you might think. He has never liked shows that save all their big plot resolutions for the finale, so he's promising to reveal some major secrets by midseason. Look for an episode starring horror director David Cronenberg as a researcher who helps Syd figure out what happened to her.
And what did happen? Abrams says you'll just have to wait and see.
''It's my favorite sort of Alias stuff. It's something you assume will be one way and turns out to be another.''
