Watch With Kristin: Forecasting the Future for TV's Could-Be Loves
by Kristin
Could-Be Couples: Is TV romance actually dead? Everywhere you
look--Luke and Lorelai, Sydney and Vaughn, Rachel and Ross--couples are
BEGGING to be together but dancing around one another like Hokey Pokey
Elmos.
These roller-coaster romances can drive even the most devoted fan
bonkers, sometimes even making us pledge never to watch the show again.
And yet we do. Every week. Hmmm, maybe that's why we watch?
For an answer, I went to the TV mastermind I respect more than TiVo
itself, Alias and Felicity creator JJ Abrams. "I think it's absolutely
possible, perhaps better, to find ways to keep couples together," says
Abrams. "But 'together' doesn't mean a relationship without conflict.
Unless your couple is at times at odds, there's no story to be told."
That said, we should just leave those hardworking producers alone and
let them do what they want. But what fun would that be? So, let's
embrace the inherent drama of these dynamic duos and tackle what
everyone wants to ask: Will they ever get together? Now, mind you, I
can't solve each mystery, but I can give some hints to what lies ahead.
Sydney & Vaughn of Alias
Where They Are: Not together, thanks to Vaughn's new wife, Lauren Reed
(Melissa George). But according to Abrams, "While they may not be
together at the moment, their feelings for each other obviously run
deep. They weren't a couple at first, then they were, now they're not.
But theirs is an ongoing story. As in life, you can't really judge a
relationship by any one moment."
Where They're Headed: Though Vaughn's marriage seems to be falling
apart at the seams, word is Sydney (Jennifer Garner) will be hitting
the sheets with--augh!--someone who's not Vaughn. Don't worry, though,
this other man won't be sticking around long.
