'Alias' Spy Garner Joins Forces with Real-Life CIA
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The CIA (news - web sites) says actress
Jennifer Garner (news), star of ABC's espionage thriller "Alias," has
what it takes to be a real-life spy, and will soon be helping to lure
new recruits to the intelligence agency.
The 31-year-old actress has agreed to appear in a recruitment video
that the CIA plans to produce and screen for prospective applicants
at job fairs and college campuses, said Chase Brandon, the CIA's
liaison with the film industry and a consultant for "Alias."
"We've been talking to Jennifer for a number of months, and she's
been interested in doing it," Brandon told Reuters on Thursday. "The
issue has really been her incredibly busy schedule."
Brandon said the CIA was "standing by" with a commercial film crew in
California ready to tape what would be the "fairly few lines" she
would contribute to the video as soon as she can make the time.
The Emmy-nominated performer catapulted to fame as the sexy secret
agent Sydney Bristow on "Alias," now going into its third season, and
as the comic book heroine Elektra, opposite Ben Affleck (news), in
the film "Daredevil."
Brandon said Garner possesses the ideal mix of traits that the CIA is
seeking in its new recruits, including the young demographic she
represents.
"Her basic qualities of intelligence and integrity and creativity, as
a person she has what we look for," Brandon said. "If Jennifer ever
decides she doesn't want to wear dark glasses of the celebrity
status, she can put on dark glasses and be a spy. She's got what it
takes."
Brandon said it was possible that actor Carl Lumbly, who co-stars as
agent Marcus Dixon on the series, would join her in the video.
Garner's publicist could not immediately be reached for comment, but
the actress herself was quoted in The Hollywood Reporter as
acknowledging she had been asked to contribute to an official CIA
video. "It's a recruitment video (to show) university graduate
students," she said.
