Assuming an "Alias"
by Kevin Thompson
SPOILERS!
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Jennifer Garner is getting some competition
on "Alias" _ for one night, anyway.
Vivica A. Fox guest-stars in tonight's episode as Toni Cummings, a
rogue security systems expert Sydney (Garner) goes to for help during
a mission. I caught up with Fox, who took time out from the Los
Angeles set of "Getting Played," a romantic comedy she's shooting
with Bill Bellamy and Carmen Electra, to talk about her most recent
TV appearance.
Question: Tell me about your role.
Answer: She's a bad girl who's the best at her craft.
Q: Why'd you want to do it?
A: It's "Alias!" It's a hot show where girls have control and kick a--
. They have great costumes, great makeup and great scripts.
Q: You must be the sexiest security systems designers ever.
A: (laughs) Absolutely, honey! (The producers) were like, "We want
her to be hot!' So I said, "Let me break out something from my
closet,' and I went and got this sexy little blue dress and they were
like, "Perfect!' I don't get a chance to play bad characters that
often. I was just a b---h on wheels.
Q: Do bad girls have more fun?
A: Absolutely! They get away with murder almost. I feel like good
girls finish last nowadays. Things have so changed.
Q: Is this a one-shot deal or will we see you again?
A: It's going to turn into a recurring character. (The producers)
said, "Let us know your schedule and we'll work with it and bring you
back.'
Q: Do you get a chance to kick butt?
A: Not yet. You know that was the first thing I thought was going to
happen. I was, like, "I know there's gonna be a fight scene!' They
said, "This time you're just wearing stilettos.'
Q: "Alias " can be a convoluted spy thriller. Any problems following
the script?
A: No, not at all. Don't forget, honey, I just finished working with
Quentin Tarantino (in "Kill Bill, Vol 1"). The more twisted, the
better.
Q: TV or movies ... which do you prefer?
A: I love movies and the direction my life has taken in film. I don't
mind doing television, but I like doing guest appearances where you
hit it and quit it.
Q: You have a tendency to play strong, forceful, assertive women. Is
that because that's how you are in your personal life?
A: That's how I am in my personal life. I've been on my own since I
was 17 and I had to be strong and go after my dream.
Q: Has Halle Berry's Oscar win opened up more doors for black
actresses?
A: Oh, God, absolutely. I've worked non-stop since she said my name.
I love ya, girl! Thank ya!
Q: Like just about every other actor in Hollywood, you've starred in
several failed TV shows. Do you ever become disillusioned with the
business?
A: I became a little disillusioned with TV because I don't believe
they give things a chance to get their legs. And I don't believe the
black population is represented fairly in the Nielsen (ratings). I
never ran into a black person who had a Nielsen box.
Q: You were one sexy woman in "Two Can Play That Game."
A: Why thank you. I worked really hard about the style (of my
character). I whipped out my own credit card on that one. I was,
like, "Baby, I need Versace!'
Q: "Booty Call." "Juwanna Man." "Boat Trip." Any regrets at about any
of those films?
A: Absolutely not. "Boat Trip" was great. I got to work with Cuba
(Gooding Jr.). The movie came out during the war and there was
nothing I could do. "Juwanna Man," loved it. I played basketball in
high school so it was great to play a basketball player. I haven't
really done any films that I'm ashamed of.
Q: You've worked with some pretty sexy actors _ Will Smith, LL Cool
J, Morris Chestnut, Cuba Gooding Jr. Who's the sexiest?
A: Oh, God ... there's a tie. Will Smith and Morris Chestnut. Will is
so giving and wonderful as an actor and he has this great body.
Morris is a big ol' chocolate Hershey's kiss. You can never get
enough.
Q: It's Saturday night. You're not working. What are you doing?
A: Having a nice dinner, a nice glass of wine, kicking it with my
girlfriends.
