'Alias' Controversy
The fifth and what may be the final season of "Alias" hasn't even begun airing yet, and fans of the series are up in arms about the rumor that the show's leading man MICHAEL VARTAN may be leaving the series for good.
"On a personal level it's flattering to know there are people out there who actually care about the character I play," Michael tells our KEVIN FRAZIER, "But come on, it's a TV show."
In the finale of season four, as Sydney (JENNIFER GARNER) and Vaughn (Michael) were finally heading out for their romantic weekend in Santa Barbara, they are involved in a car wreck, which may not be an accident. The crash takes place just as Vaughn drops a bomb on Sydney: He is not the man she thinks he is. It was a great cliffhanger, but will it lead to his demise? And what did he mean? Does he have a separate identity?
If the New York Post's insider has it right, August 17th was the actor's last day of shooting because he was allegedly killed off the series.
So is his onscreen death just a rumor? "Yes, indeed," Michael says. But he admits that without his fans -- even the rabid ones -- he wouldn't be where he is today.
"It's a double-edged sword because you're talking about the people who watch your show and have allowed me to be here today and talk to you and pay my rent," he admits. "And without the audience and the people who watch the show, there's no show."
But he's humbled by the fans that are rallying around him. "By the same token I think you have a marginal group of those fans who take it to the next level and don't realize it's just a TV show and we're not curing cancer," he says. "It's sweet and you just have to go with the flow and not take anything too seriously."
In an ET Online poll, we asked fans if they felt the 'Monster-In-Law' star should stay on "Alias" and the results were overwhelming. With close to 5,000 votes, 88% felt Michael should stay on the hit ABC series, with only 12% believing he should leave.
ET's Kevin Frazier caught up with the "Alias" star at the Second Annual Hollywood Fantasy Football League draft for the upcoming TV special: "NFL Total Access Hollywood Fantasy Football League," premiering Tuesday, Sept. 6 at 9 p.m., to see if he could get any sneaks peaks from the hunky actor. So far, both ABC and series creator J.J. ABRAMS are remaining mum about the plot of upcoming episodes.
Also on hand for the draft were REGINA KING, JALEEL WHITE and JOSH CHARLES.
