This Gay Week in Television
By Ross von Metzge
Alright folks, I’ve been promising and promising and now, I intend to deliver on my sneak peak at shows (new and returning) and plotlines you have to keep your eyes and ears peeled for in the coming television season. But as we all know, long gone are the days when all shows premiere in September and the rest of the year is just a wait and see to determine which shows get the ax first. Now, between network TV, our friends on cable (both pay and basic), the gay TV networks and some contributions from across the pond, new TV shows are rolling out year round—there’s always something new to look forward to.
But for now, as network TV does prepare to roll out its crop of contenders for breakout hit of the year, we’ll turn the focus to them. And next week we’ll look at some old favorites, throw in a dash of cable, blah, blah, blah… and so on, and so forth. By the time I’m done educating you on what’s good to watch on TV, you won’t know what hit you. You’ll need a second TiVo for all this good stuff.
Don’t worry, we aren’t completely straying from our basic format—pently of good stuff happened in TV this week I wanna tell you about… more on that in a minute.
There are a slew of new shows coming to TV sets across America this September and October—40-something alone from the big three networks (plus Fox and the CW). I’m sure several will make a go at introducing gay characters and plotlines, but a few just seem ripe to include us in their day to day antics.
Big Shots might not be the most obvious choice for a show to feature gay and lesbian sub plots—especially when you read the sales pitch: “The tale of four powerful men and the women who love them, or used to, or who take them to couples' therapy.” But regardless of whether or not we ever see any of these men get it on with other guys, any show that features Michael Vartan and Dylan McDermott in and out of their legal attire has got to be worth my time—and a fantasy or 12. As an added bonus, long rumored lesbian Nia Long pops up as one of the suit’s ex wives. She played gay in The Broken Hearts Club—with any luck, lightening will strike twice? Big shots premieres in September on ABC.
