On Set With the Men of 'Big Shots'
By Laura Saltman
Another rough day at the office having to spend time with the very hot Michael Vartan and Dylan McDermott. Their new show "Big Shots" also starring Christopher Titus and Josh Malina has a prime time slot right after "Grey's Anatomy". So, if any show has a a chance to succeed this would be the one.
The show is about four New York CEO's at major corporations who are all friends. There is lots of testosterone and male bonding going on in this show that is part drama, part comedy. They each have their own "women problems" with the females in their lives all while running billion dollar corporations and of course making time for a round of golf. Think of it as "Sex and the City" meets "Barbarians at the Gate."
After hanging out on set all day what I learned is that the four stars of this show have great chemistry which according to Michael was instant, "I never met Christopher or Dylan and you know I think it took us about 37 seconds for us to start ripping each other and making fun of one another. So, from the first day we knew that this should be fun if nobody ends up being a diva."
My first interview was with Christopher Titus who had an edgy sitcom on Fox, "Titus". He seems like such a rough edge kind of guy that when I heard he was cast, I couldn't quite picture him as a powerful CEO. After watching the pilot though I was surprised to find he's actually kind of sexy. He's also a riot and by far the most personable of the four. When I jokingly asked about who has the best stubble between Michael and Dylan he played along brilliantly, "Stubble wise I would say it is not even about the stubble who has more who has less it is the mastery of the stubble. I would say Dylan has mastered the stubble and smokey look and Vartan has mastered damaged bad boy. Josh used to work with Burt and Ernie on 'Sesame Street' and I am compared to Ralph Malph on 'Happy Days.'"
Right around this time is when Joshua Malina tried interrupting Christopher's interview causing him to head over to the piano and sing him a little diddy. Josh is best know from his role on the "The West Wing" and the brilliant but cancelled series "Sports Night." He's the most self-deprecating of the group. Somehow I got him to reveal to me that he has a secret obsession, crock potting. He also revealed to me that he and Chris share a trailer while Dylan and Michael have their own. This just happens to me the moment when Michael decides to come in and start throwing jelly beans at Josh. ( It's kind of like a frat house here !). His reason for the shared trailer, "That would be a representations situation. Now I don't know what kind of representation Josh has maybe if his wife wasn't his agent he would have a bigger trailer. I am joking yes and I never let them forget that."
Unfortunately, I only got to spend a few minutes with Dylan who is by far the most serious of the bunch. Then again how can you really complain about getting to stare into those deep blue eyes for any amount of time? I think this show has a chance of success. The casting could not be more perfect. Guys will watch it for Titus and Malina and girls will watch it for Vartan and McDermott.
