ABC Drama Pilots: Cashmere Mafia and Big Shots
By Karen Woodward
Too early to tell if these will be worth watching for the long haul, but place your bets on Big Shots.
More pilot reviews, this time on ABC Dramas. Both Cashmere Mafia and Big Shots are tales of successful 30-something friends, just from two different viewpoints: Cashmere covers the ladies and Big Shots takes a stab at the men.
Big Shots:
An intriguing ABC drama about the friendship between four successful men: Dylan McDermott as a cosmetics executive (a popular profession this season) , still in love with (and having sex with) his ex wife, and with a strained relationship with his teenage daughter. (The fabulous and sexy Paige Turco plays his wife, and Peyton List actually plays her own age as his daughter. A real breakthrough role for her, she steals every scene). Michael Vartan plays James, an executive at what appears to be a Target-type store; he seemingly has a great marriage until he discovers that his wife was having an affair with his (now dead) boss. Perhaps his "work wife" will turn into something more. Joshua Molina is Karl, a sad-sack who is cheating on his wife with a bimbo who wants way more than she should. (The usual likeable Molina is oddly boring in this), and finally Christopher Titus plays Brody, a ..well, not really sure what he does. He's important in the business world and he works hard to make his wife happy.
The show is almost a guilty pleasure -- at this point it could go one of two ways: if the characters and their relationships are developed, this could be an addicting drama. However, if it slips into Good 'Ol Boy-ism, then this is one to skip.
Not appointment television, but may be worth Tivo-ing to save for later, to see if it gets any better.
Big Shots airs on ABC Thursday nights, at 10pm. It premieres September 1.
