New 'Paige' for Newman; Baker at CBS

By Nellie Andreeva

SPOILERS!

Jaime Ray Newman has landed the title role in the CW's drama pilot "I am Paige Armstrong," while Emmy winner Kathy Baker has been tapped to co-star in CBS' drama pilot "Babylon Fields."

Additionally, Kevin Dunn has come aboard ABC's comedy pilot "Sam I Am," Kelly Rutherford has been added to the CW's drama pilot "Gossip Girl," Annie Potts has been cast in the CW's untitled Maggie Friedman dramedy pilot, and Peter Keleghan has been added to NBC's comedy pilot "Business Class."

In other pilot casting news, Amy Sloan has been added to ABC's untitled Jon Feldman drama, and Leslie Grossman has joined CBS' untitled Scott Silveri comedy.

"Armstrong" centers on a naive but bright twentysomething congressional aide (Newman) who becomes so infuriated by her boss' political maneuvering that she decides to run against him. Also cast in the pilot is Neal Bledsoe as the Congressman's chief speech writer, who is courting Newman's character.

Newman, who has been recurring this season on the CW's "Veronica Mars," also landed a recurring role in the ABC/ABC TV Studio drama pilot "Marlowe." She is repped by Innovative Artists and the Burstein Co.

"Babylon," from 20th TV, is a comedic drama about a town where the dead are resurrected and resume their former lives. Baker will play a low-rent suburban housewife who, along with her daughter (Amber Tamblyn), is forced to face her cruel, abusive husband whom the two of them murdered with an ax.

On the big screen, Baker most recently was seen in "All the King's Men."

"Sam," from ABC TV Studio, centers on a woman (Christina Applegate) with amnesia who has to rediscover her life. Dunn (Gersh, Lighthouse Entertainment) will play her dad. The actor next will appear in "Transformers."

"Gossip," from WBTV, revolves around privileged Manhattan high school girls. Rutherford will play the mom of the lead girl (Blake Lively), a former ballerina and rock groupie.

Series credits for Rutherford (9 Yards Entertainment) include "E-Ring" and "Threat Matrix."

The untitled Maggie Friedman project, from WBTV, is a dramedy about a young woman who is a life coach and a witch. Potts will play her sexy, bohemian, earthy mother.

"Business," from NBC Uni TV, centers on two salesmen (Mark Valley, Horatio Sanz). Keleghan will be the narrator, who appears throughout the episode to provide background information on the characters.

The untitled Jon Feldman project, from WBTV, centers on four CEOs and CEOs-to-be who are best buddies and members at the same golf club. Sloan (TalentWorks, Thruline) will play the wife of one of the men (Joshua Malina).

The untitled Scott Silveri project, from WBTV, is an ensemble show about people -- one of them played by Grossman ("The Jake Effect") -- who are up all night.

In other pilot news, Fox's comedy "Hackett" has been rolled.
