The Whims and Woes of CEOs
By John Maynard
"Big Shots"
Thursdays at 10:01 p.m. on ABC
Basic story: They're rich, they're powerful, they're miserable. Meet
the "Big Shots" - four alpha-male best buddies who are leaders in
their industries but whose lives are falling apart around them.
There's a sexy divorce and cosmetics king (Dylan McDermott) who's
trying to keep an ugly secret at bay; a guilt-ridden philanderer
(Joshua Malina) who's made millions in the pharmaceutical industry;
an obnoxious jerk (Christopher Titus) who runs a crisis management
firm; and a resident nice guy and supermarket executive (Michael
Vartan) who is dealt a personal blow.
What it faces: With a "Grey's Anatomy" lead-in, it might not take
long for "Big Shots" to hit the big time. It faces "ER" (NBC)
and "Without a Trace" (CBS).
What you'll like: Performances by McDermott and Malina stand out in
this ensemble cast, which delivers more than a few clever one-liners.
There's a lot more guy humor than you'd expect from a show that
follows "Grey's" - but not too much to scare off that series' largely
female fan base.
What you won't: Viewers, get ready to suspend some disbelief: That's
the only way you're going to get through "Big Shots." In the pilot
episode alone, you're bound to think more than once, "That wouldn't
really happen!"
Bottom line: Accept "Big Shots" for what it is, a purely male-
oriented soap opera with some good jokes, and everyone comes out
happy.
