Early review of "Rogue"

By magregus

Thanks to vsf for the heads-up!

MILD SPOILERS!

Hey guys, just back from a test screening of Rogue this evening. Greg stated the movie's 70% complete and they've got 6 months to finish the edit. All the CGI was in rough form no complete shots at all. Runtime presently about 80 minutes. The acting is excellent, great performances from all the lead cast. Some nice humerous moments to go with the action of which there is plenty. If anyone's got any questions feel free to ask.

Q. Since I'm a huge Michael Vartan fan, how do you rate his performance? I happy to hear there is humor injected into the film. Do you have any idea when a trailer might be available? A poster?

Very good performance from Michael & Radha, in fact theres no bad performances at all which really helps you to feel for what they are going through. I'm not sure on a trailer but I will find out and get back to you, same with posters.

Q. It has been noted that Dimension pushed back the opening date to Feb. 2 from December. Do you have any idea why?

Not sure why, there is a fair bit of CGI work in the film, possibly due to this or just a better slot to launch the film, I'll see what I can find out.

Q. How gory is it?

Currently its not too gory but the CGI shots are not finished so hard to judge at the moment.

Q. How was Radha Mitchell?

Excellent, really loved Radha in this movie, some of the movies I've seen her in recently I wasn't a fan of but after this I am a big fan of hers.

Q. Can I just ask you if it's more a thriller or an horror movie?

Definitely a thriller.

Q. Is there going to be a 'making of Rogue' as there was for Wolf Creek

Definitely I've seen some of the behind the scenes stuff.

Followup answers from magregus at IMDb.

Q. I've read that the Australian countryside is very prominent in the film and kind of like another character. Did you find it so?

During the beginning of the film while they are on the river cruise there is some gorgeous shots from the Northern Territory.

Q. Did you think that Michael Vartan and Radha Mitchell had good chemistry?

The entire cast was perfect, that was one thing that is great about it the acting and chemistry between everyone.

Q. Any underwater scenes with Radha Mitchell?

No underwater scenes with Radha.

I don't have any news re a trailer or anything at the moment but when I find out anything I will let you know. I'm guessing they will wait more until the CGI shots are completed.

1. Where was the test-screening held at? And did you score a ticket to go?

Screening was at the ACMI at federation square in Melbourne. I was invited to attend.

2. How does the film compare to Wolf Creek (if you have seen it)? And will those who loved (or hated) it like this film?

Certainly have seen WC, very differnet movies indeed, as I posted earlier this is more a thriller then a horror flick. I am interested in seeing the final CGI as to how gory it turns out to be. But yeah very differnt movies, someone who hated WC could totally enjoy this due to the different styles.

3. What is the tone of the film like? Does it have a serious tone like Jaws and The Birds or is more of a send up tone like Alligator and Pirahna?

No its a very serious tone like Jaws.

4. How was the visual style of the film? Is done in the same HDV semi- doco realistic style of Wolf Creek or does have a more cinematic quality?

Visually its great and it was shot on Sony Hi Def camera which I saw on the set visit. What we saw wasnt color corrected and was rough footage but still impressive nonetheless. I will say I would of loved if it was shot in 2.35:1 especially on the shots of the beautiful landscapes in the N.T.

5. You said that Michael Vartan and Radha Mitchell give great performances but how did the supporting cast go (Sam Worthington, Stephan Curry and, of course, John Jarratt)? and does it have solid character delvelopment, so we care what happens to all of them.

Yeah I did mention the entire cast was excellent, really good, Stephen Curry was particularly good. The Character development is interesting , I think Greg took on board some feedback of WC where people thought there was a bit too much CD. There is a lot shorter CD in this but I think it works well, lets you get a good indication of the characters before all the action starts.

6. I've read in interviews that the film besides being a "nature-run- amok" film it also, like Wolf Creek, has a psychological element to it like it shows how the each of the characters react differently in the situation that they are in. Is that true?

True, they react very differently.

7. How did the preview audience react to the film?

Interestingly, applause at the end, but I think from my feedback and others there will be some signifant changes probably to the ending. Not that its bad at the moment but it can be improved upon.

8. Is the crocodile itself just normal size one or is he a giant, big- arse one?

The croc is a monster!!

9. Is is intense and scary? And also entertaining?

Yeah hard for me to judge this just on my screening as there was no CGI so what you got in place was lots of laughter from the audience when the basic CGI shots were shown. Look its entertaining for sure, I'm looking foward to seeing the complete feature.

10. What rating would you give it, either out of 10 or out of 5?

Currently I'd rate it a 7 out of 10, but Im hoping iwth some additional editing and changes and once the CGI's completed it will jump to an 8 or 9.
