First viewing of Greg McLean's ROGUE!

by Michael Gingold

SPOILERS!

Thanks to SouthernGal and Maryann for the heads-up!

Fango just heard from a source who sat in on early screening of ROGUE, the new killer-crocodile chiller from Dimension Films and WOLF CREEK director Greg McLean (pictured)—and tells us it’s a winner. “What we have here,” he says, “is the best big-animal-eats-people movie since JAWS, with the best giant-reptile CGI effects since JURASSIC PARK. It kicks ANACONDA’s ass! Just like in WOLF CREEK, Greg McLean lets you get to know the characters before the big croc starts stalking them—but if you’re one of those people who thought the first half of WOLF CREEK dragged, rest assured there are a lot more potential victims for variety. And even if you saw WOLF CREEK, you’ll never recognize John Jarratt here—instead of a savage, sadistic killer, he plays an overweight nice guy in a fishing hat! All the actors do great work, and it’s nice to see the beautiful Radha Mitchell do a role in her native Australian accent.

“But the real news is that ROGUE is really, seriously scary when the croc starts munching on the characters. Even before you see it, the suspense is killer as you wonder when the croc is going to leap out of the water to eat someone, and who’s going to be the one to get eaten. Then when it does show up, the effects make it completely believable and really frightening, in a way all those cheesy CGI killer animals in Sci Fi Channel movies are not. The audience was screaming and jumping and yelling advice to the characters throughout—and even though this was an advance test screening, the movie seemed completely finished with music and titles, and looks great. The location photography makes you want to take your next vacation in Australia—aside from the people-eating crocodile, of course.”

Sounds good to us. ROGUE also stars Michael (ALIAS) Vartan and Sam Worthington; Dimension currently has it slotted for a February 2, 2007 release.
