Well there was an implied romantic history between "Kate" and Sam Worthington's character - there a subtle visual clue to this - but it was never followed through. Perhaps one of the presumably many deleted scenes that will be in the DVD extras, along with "Russell" (John Jarratt)'s character background which, again, is alluded to, but never fleshed
