Weird and Funny Coincidences - Must be Fate!

Have you ever noticed something that suggests that the characters and actors were meant to find each other? Or something else that has striked you as a weird coincidence? Please help us to add to the list! (Note: It can't get *too* reaching, though. ;-) You can contact us here: thesafehouse@vartanho.com.

In the very first episode; when Sydney gets caught sneaking around at the party by 'Suit and Glasses' she says something along the lines of: "I was just looking for the bathroom...believe me, you don't know my boss RON. If he knew i had been drinking and got in trouble i would loose my job..."(yadda yadda, who cares) But i thought Ron being her bosses name was funny because as we all know Ron Rifkin plays her boss! :-P!

Noticed by queer_scottish_monkey. Thanks! :)

In Episode #3.13 "Pool" of "The Pretender" Jennifer Garner plays a character named Billie H. Vaughn.

Noticed by Lugia, Vartan Ho #8.

Michael Vartan has played Lancelot in "The Mists of Avalon," falling in love with Gwenhwyfar, which is an old form of the name "Jennifer".

Noticed by Lugia, Vartan Ho #8.

Also in "The Mists of Avalon": There was a love triangle between King Arthur (played by "Danny" Edward Atterton), Gwenhwyfar and Lancelot (played by Michael Vartan). At one point Arthur, married to Gwenhwyfar, gave Lancelot his blessing to "get together" with his wife. Do you think as Danny on Alias, he gave Vaughn the same blessing? ;-)

Noticed by Souris, Vartan Ho #4.

On the Mets, there is a player with the last name Vaughn:

"The New York Mets placed first baseman Mo Vaughn on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 6, with a small non-displaced fracture of the fifth metacarpal of the right hand."

And isn't that what we all want? Mo Vaughn!

According to 4filmmakers.com, Ian La Frenais (who is Michael Vartan's stepfather) and Dick Clement ("Excess Baggage") should be credited for rewrites of "Pearl Harbor," a movie which starrs Jennifer Garner. While they were paid, they were never given any screen credit.

Noticed by Spygirl, Vartan Ho #5.

Merrin Dungey (Francie) and Kevin Weisman (Marshall) were in a college play together called "Anatol". Later they graduated from UCLA together.

Noticed by Kate, Vartan Ho #1.

Carl Lumbly (Dixon) and Peter Berg (Noah Hicks) went to the same college: Macalester College, Saint Paul, Minnesota.

Carl also guest starred in an episode of "Chicago Hope," where Peter Berg was a regular. (Full credit: "Chicago Hope" (1994) playing "Michael Johnson" in episode: "Life Lines" (episode # 2.17) 2/26/1996)

Noticed by Kate, Vartan Ho #1.

So many things in Sydney's life point to Vaughn.

1) Francie (sounds almost like France, where Vaughn was born)

2) Will (short for William, Vaughn's father's name)

Noticed by forsythia84. Thanks!

The first season finale "Almost Thirty Years," which features the shocking return of Laura Bristow, Sydney's mother, was first aired on Mother's Day 2002.

Greg Grunberg was in "The Pallbearer" with Michael Vartan. He played "Abernathy cousin #1". J.J. Abrams was also a producer of this movie.

It's a little coincidence that in "Wet Hot American Summer" Bradley Cooper's character and another one of the counselors put together a number from "Godspell" for the camp talent show and Victor Garber was in the Toronto production of "Godspell" as well as the film version.

Noticed by Ashley. Thanks!

Ok, in the episode The Box Part 1, Will is given a key to a lockbox by his secret informant. In The Box Part 2, Will takes the key to the to the lockedbox at the pier. While en route to the said box, he sees a boat in the harbor. The boat is named the "Alba Varden," which was the name of the boat in the Lethal Weapon films. In Rendezvous, we find out that Will's informer (who sent him the key) was either Khasinau, or one of his minions. The actor who plays Khasinau (Derrick O'Connor), was in Lethal Weapon 2 (as a bad guy, natch).

Noticed by Thorne, Vartan Ho #71. Thanks!

In "The Box" two-parter "McTiernan Air Conditioning" was painted on the side of Cole's van. John McTiernan directed "Die Hard".

SPOILERS for "Sum Of All Fears" ahead!

Ron Rifkin is in the movie playing Secretary of State Sidney Owens... and there's a point in the film where someone says something to the effect of "Dammit Sidney.. the CIA ...blah blah" and I thought to myself.. "I wonder if SD-6 knows about this"

Some other people in the theater got the joke as well.. everytime someone called Ron "Sidney" I could hear a chuckle.

Noticed by 'chelle. Thanks!

Just read in "The Ultimate Spy Handbook" by DK Pub an interesting little tidbit. In the old KGB structure, the 'Directorate K' "infiltrated foreign intelligence services and was in charge of the security of Soviet embassies." So is the K Directorate in Alias the same as the Soviet era KGB division?

Noticed by Anna Louise. Thanks!

"It Had To Be You": I thought it was funny that Michael's character Charlie Hudson has this line...when asked by his friend how he knows the woman, Charlie responds, "Oh okay. We're both spies and we're gonna make love before we get shot by the CIA."
But it was funny cause, for those of you that haven't seen it, *spoilers*, Michael plays a former cop (a negotiator), who sort of lost his nerve after a jumper jumped on his watch. He and his former partner actually mention the CIA thing 2 or 3 times throughout the movie. I can't remember the exact words but it was something to the effect of "Oh, yeah, the CIA hasn't gotten me yet." or something like that, referring to the first CIA comment I mentioned.

Noticed by Kate and a few fellow 'Hos. ;)

Jennifer Garner is repped by Endeavor and attorney Jason Sloane. Sloane, get it? ;)

Noticed by Lugia.

Michael co-starred in "It Had to be You" with Natasha Henstridge, who played Anna (kinda like Alias's Anna Espinosa), and Natasha Henstridge will be on an NBC show called "She Spies" about 3 female spies...kinda like Alias...hmm...

Noticed by Erica. Thanks! :)

Wanna be Sydney?

The CIA likes grad students, apparently!

ABCNews.com: Analyze This: "Want to combat terrorism for the CIA? Then fill out your application. Your graduate school application, that is."

Read the full article here: "In Terror Fight, CIA Leans on Analysts to See Big Picture"

Noticed by Lady J on Vartanetc. boards.

In "Touch Me" Michael Vartan's character Adam goes to see his brother Bail at a club. Bail introduces him to these two girls he was flirting with and one girl's name is 'Vaughn'. He actually says 'Vaughn' very slowly, as if accentuating that it is 'the girl for you'. But Adam wants nothing to really do with them.
Bail then walks off to the dancefloor with the other girl and leaves 'Vaughn' behind with Adam (MV). She keeps asking him to dance. But he keeps saying "Really no, thanks." Then Bail suddenly starts spazzing on the floor and Adam runs over to him trying to see what's up and to help his brother.
The next scene shows him in the hospital learning that Bail went into a coma.

Noticed by Kate, Vartan Ho #1.

In the film, "Romeo is Bleeding", Lena Olin's character Mona Demarkov is a sick and twisted Russian hitwoman with a passion for killing.

The cop Mona seduces is named Jack (Gary Oldman).

A few memorable lines from Mona:
"Don't worry, Jack. I'm not against you."
"I never loved you, Jack...you're filth...even when I screwed you."
"I lied, you never got to me, not for a minute."

eeeekkk.

Noticed by Marifel, Vartan Ho #18 . Thanks! : )

According to imdb.com, MV turned down a role in Scream 3. We don't know what role, but wouldn't it be quite the coincidence if it was the one that Scott Foley played?

Noticed by Souris, Vartan Ho #4

In Never Been Kissed, Michael Vartan plays Sam Coulson the ENGLISH teacher. What is Sydney in college training to become? That's right. She wants to be an ENGLISH teacher. Coincidence: I think not. It is a sign that Vaughn and Sydney need to do some major surreptitious lurving over books.

Noticed by Hugefan16, Vartan Ho #279. Thanks!

On the premiere episode of Bravo's new series "Breaking News," Alias producer/actor Ken Olin (David McNeil) played a character named Richard Sloane.

Noticed by Souris, Vartan Ho #4.

I was just on a vacation to Seattle & the Puget Sound area and I noticed a small suburb named Vaughn on the map. And not far away, on Whidbey Island, was a town called Langley.

Noticed by Pokey, Vartan Ho #321.

On the Ally Mcbeal where Michael is a guest star he is part of a father and son team that Ally is dating. The father's name is Michael and Michael's name is Jonathan (which we all know is Jack's real name). Just a small little coincidence that could mean Jack and Vaughn are someday destined to be their own father and son (in-law!) team!

Noticed by Brittan, Vartan Ho #55.

Jennifer Garner and Michael Weatherly did a TV pilot in 1998 called "Significant Others" together. Michael Weatherly later went on to do "Dark Angel," in which he co-starred with Jessica Alba, who he is now engaged to. Jessica Alba had a small part in "Never Been Kissed," which Michael Vartan was in. Another coincidence kinda weird is that Jessica and Jennifer both presented an award together last year at the Emmys.

Noticed by Connie, Vartan Ho #363.

In 1978, Ron Rifkin was a guest star on the TV show, 'Alice'. His character's name was Eric. We all know that Alice is the name of Vaughn's ex-girlfriend and Eric is the name of Vaughn's best friend!

Also, Carl Lumbly was a guest star in LA Law in 1989, in episode 4.7. (Get it 47? ha ha ha..)

Noticed by Cowpenguin, VartanHo #342. Thanks! :)

Just 3 things I found amusing after watching "Dude, Where's My Car?" for the fourth time...just thought I'd share!

- the chimpanzee documentary that Chester is watching at the beginning reminds me of the documentary on monkeys that Marshall talks about in one of the episodes.

- the scene where Jesse is trying to whisper to Chester to use the fire extinguisher to knock out one of the Zoltan dudes - 'cause fire extinguishers play a really big part in "The Box, Part II" and in "Almost Thirty Years".

- the scene where Chester gets his hand caught in the glass window and the lady officer threatens to confiscate his pinky - reminds me of Sloane sacrificing his index finger in "The Box, Part II."

Noticed by Liza. Thanks! :)

In a now defunct ABC show called "Fantasy Island," Jennifer Garner guest stars in an episode called "Dreams" where her love interest in the episode is a stock broker named Michael.

Noticed by Krisa, Vartan Ho #188 from Against Protocol. Thanks! :)

I'm currently reading "For the Roses" by Julie Garwood. As all of you may know, "For the Roses" is the book that the Hallmark Hall of Fame movie "Rose Hill" was based on. Of course, "Rose Hill" starred Jennifer Garner as the grown-up Mary Rose. I found something kind of goofy in the first chapter of the book. When the boys think the baby (Mary Rose) is a boy, they decide to name her...

...Sidney.

Noticed by Amanda, Vartan Ho #416. Thanks! :)

The 29-year-old Garner enjoyed a warm and loving childhood in Charleston, W.Va., where she studied ballet. By seventh grade she was performing in community musicals. Then, while earning a theater degree from Ohio's Denison University, she hatched a plan that would next carry her to Yale's drama school. "But I went to Manhattan to visit a friend and, on a whim, went on a couple of auditions. I got a job and stayed.' That first job - in spring 1995 - was as an understudy for the 19th century comedy "A Month in the Country'' at the respected Roundabout Theater. Its leading man: Ron Rifkin. "Can you stand it!'' Garner crows. "The irony!''

Noticed by Karen, and special thanks to Vartanetc.com. Thanks! : )

[Mild Spoiler Warning!] In [the Season Two episode, The Indicator,] Sydney's fictitious grandparents are hungarian. Michael Vartan's grandfather is from Hungary, and moved to France during the war.

Noticed by Vasuki. Thanks! : )

James Handy (Devlin) is portraying a character named Jack on "Breaking News" on Bravo.

Noticed by Souris, Vartan Ho #4. Thanks! : )

Vaughn's dog is named 'Donovan'. The man who came up with the backbone to the CIA is named William J. Donovan.

Noticed by Desiree, Vartan Ho #419. Thanks! : )

Vaughn's old girlfriend was named Alice. At Francie and Syd's Halloween party, Syd dressed as Alice in Wonderland. Coincidence? I think not. Syd is the new "Alice" in Vaughn's life.

Noticed by tvglutton. Thanks! : )

(For any Marshall/Vicki shippers, or those who think Vicki is the CIA version of Marshall) The actress who plays Vicki [Vicki Crane] and the actor who plays Marshall guest starred as a couple on two episodes of Roswell (the pilot and "The UFO Convention") in season one. Noticed by Bryana. Thanks! : )

Just saw "Tuck Everlasting", knowing that Victor Garber was in it, but not knowing (til the credits, that is) that Amy Irving was playing across from Mr. Garber. [They played Mother and Robert Foster. I can't be sure, but I think the movie was cast before Alias went into production in 2001. I know read somewhere that the movie sat on the shelf for a while because of problems within Disney Studios. -Kate]

Noticed by Kiki. Thanks! : )

Where do fictitious CIA agents go when they are not on assignment? They play cricket for England.

Michael Vaughan (i kid you not) is currently opening the batting for England in the Ashes Test Match series against Australia. [...]

So, on New Years Day, 2003, Michael Vaughan will take to the field in Sydney......

Noticed by jan. Thanks! : )

In response to the Michael Vaughan, England cricketer, coincidence, i would like to add one thing. Michael Vaughan is a very talented cricketer, (and imo a very yummy one), who played in incredible style this summer in England. Because of this, his batting average improved quite dramatically. And for a time, guess what it was on? Thats right, 47. Dont know if its really a coincidence but i thought it was funny!!!

Noticed by Songbird, Vartan Ho #279. Thanks! : )

In the Pallbearer (1996) starring David Schwimmer and Michael Vartan (in a supporting role) the Sheryl Crow song "I Shall Believe" is one of the last songs played in the film. It is also the last song played at the end of the Alias episode 2.07 'The Counteragent.'

Noticed by RA. Thanks! : )

Michael Vartan and Faye Dunaway were both in "It Had To Be You," his version- a Lifetime TV movie, her version- a CBS TV show. The two were not related, but still a funny coincidence.

Noticed by Kate, Vartan Ho #1.

In a fourth season episode of "The X-Files" Carl Lumbly played a character by the name of "Marcus Duff." His character name on Alias is "Marcus Dixon." Just thought that was interesting.

Noticed by Esselle. Thanks! : )

In the movie, "The Unbearable Lightness of Being", Lena Olin plays a character named Sabina, who is based on a real woman named Irina Dedekova.

Noticed by Sassy, Vartan Ho #846. Thanks! : )

In Trust Me, there is a CIA agent with short blonde hair and glasses. She and Kevin W. appeared in the first scene ever of Roswell together, as well as one later in the firtst season. I've known this for a long time but I just thought I'd point it out, as I was reading some of the others.

Noticed by SarahC, Vartan Ho #916. Thanks! : )

One of the funnier coincidences we've come across in a while: Too bad Christmas is over because we've found what every Vartan Ho wants! And somewhere, Michael is smiling. Check it out!

Noticed by grrlnorth. Thanks! : )

Olivia d’Abo will be guest starring in Alias’ big post-Super Bowl episode. Olivia played Anna’s friend Tracy in “It Had To Be You” !

Noticed by Alice/TwinnerA/ Vartan Ho #95. Thanks! : )

In the movie "The Majestic", starring Jim Carrey, Ron Rifkin plays the part of a lawyer named Kevin Bannerman. The coincidence, though, is that the film's writer is a man named Michael Sloane. Simple, but there it is ;)

Noticed by Diana, Vartan Ho #89. Thanks! : )

In Bradley's movie "The Last Cowboy" bradley plays a horse trainer that works with jennie garth's charater Jake(short for jacquline) in the movie Jake's dad's name is WILL COOPER

Noticed by Michelle, Vartan Ho #781. Thanks! : )

In 2.12 "The Getaway", after Syd says that nothing is going to happen with Vaughn, Francie tells her that she's going to have a cosmopolitan. Of all the drinks, why would she pick that one? And then I thought of something. Anyone recall MV's quote regarding said drink? 'I love healthy, corn-fed women who aren't afraid to have a steak, drink a cosmopolitan, and enjoy life'. Bartender...

Noticed by cindy, Vartan Ho #553. Thanks! : )

Just hit the IMDB link for Mark Ruffalo, JG's costar in her upcoming movie "13 Going on 30," and noticed that he was part of the cast of 'XX/XY' a movie in which Petra Wright, "Alice," had a part. Small world!

Noticed by Marifel, Vartan Ho#18. Thanks! : )

Oliva D'Abo (Emma in "Double Agent") was in "It Had to Be You" with MV.

Noticed by Souris, Vartan Ho #4. Thanks! : )

Olivia d'Abo was also a recurring cartoon character voice in 'The Justice League' with Carl Lumbly.

Noticed by Kate, Vartan Ho #1. Thanks! : )

In The First Wives Club, in which Victor Garber has a supporting role [as Morty], in 'Morty's' new apartment, hanging on the wall, is the symbol of Rambaldi < 0 >.

Noticed by Steph Allen. Thanks! : )

Hey, I just noticed in the closing credits that there's a producer named Tracy Delorme. Which is Vaughn's mother's maiden name, according to his ABC bio.

Caplan was also probably named after Producer Sarah Caplan.

Noticed by Souris, Vartan Ho #4 and Spygirl, Vartan Ho #5. Thanks! : )
