Word from Greg McLean, the director of "Rogue," is that the movie will be released in Australia in August, then in the U.S. in October. Apparently the Weinsteins will decide how much to push it in the U.S. based on how it does Down Under.

ROGUE going theatrical after all?
We had reported last week (based on info from on-line DVD sales sites and a video retail insider) that Dimension was sending ROGUE, the killer-crocodile film from WOLF CREEK writer/director Greg McLean starring Radha Mitchell (pictured) and Michael Vartan, straight to DVD May 22. Then the other day, we got a call from Dimension stating that such is not the case. Apparently, the movie will first play theaters in Australia (which McLean calls home and where ROGUE was lensed) via Village Roadshow this summer, followed by big-screen play in the U.S. this fall. So we got in touch with Genius Entertainment, which is partnered with The Weinstein Company in releasing Dimension titles on DVD, and a source there told us ROGUE has no definite disc date. We're happy to hear that the film, which we've been hearing great things about (see an advance report here), seems headed for Stateside theatrical release after all—though someone should tell all those web retail sites, which still have it listed as a May 22 disc title.

The Fangoria report, mentioned below, was a little off it seems. The films local distributor tells us that "Hot off the press : The Rogue U.S DVD release is wrong, Weinstein are still releasing in the US market as are we [in AU]. TWC have pulled the info off the site."

Plot Outline: An American journalist on assignment in the Australian outback encounters a man-eating crocodile.
Plot Synopsis: An idyllic wildlife cruise disintegrates into terror when a party of tourists are stalked by a massive man-eating crocodile. Pete McKell, a cynical American travel writer, joins a disparate group of holiday-makers on a river cruise through the waters of Kakadu National Park. Initially Pete clashes with their tour captain, Kate, a feisty young woman who assumes he is just another 'city-slicker' in search of a quick thrill. After an uneventful day cruising the river, Kate is reluctantly persuaded to steer their boat into unexplored territory. They discover a secluded lake but terror strikes when their craft receives a powerful blow from beneath the murky depths and begins to sink. With little choice, she beaches the vessel on the closest dry land -a tiny mud island. With a rising tide and only half an hour of daylight left, fear grips the group as they realize they are trapped in the lair of a 'rogue' crocodile, governed only by its need to hunt and kill. Begrudgingly, Pete and Kate join forces to keep hysteria at bay and in the process start to see beyond their initial impressions. Their first attempt to escape fails, but then Pete has an idea - they must trap the crocodile to enable the group to flee to the other side of the island whilst Kate swims for help. Pete volunteers to stand guard, but without warning, the beast breaks free and targets Kate who fails to resurface. As darkness descends and the muddy waters rise, a terrifying struggle ensues with only one probable outcome death.

Dimension sending ROGUE direct to DVD
We didn't want to believe it when we first got wind of this news, but a little digging confirmed it: ROGUE, writer/director Greg McLean's follow-up to WOLF CREEK, is being sent straight to DVD by The Weinstein Company/Dimension on May 20. Fango had heard recently that Dimension had removed the giant-crocodile thriller, which stars Radha (PITCH BLACK) Mitchell and ALIAS' Michael Vartan (pictured), from its most recent April 20 theatrical berth; the movie played release-date chicken earlier this year with Hollywood Pictures' similarly themed PRIMEVAL, only for the latter to be tossed out, sans any reference to its reptilian content in the ads, in early January to extreme box-office indifference. Now, with early word coming down that PRIMEVAL will hit disc in June, the Weinsteins evidently want to beat it to the punch on the home-viewing front, at least.
It's a sad fate for McLean's film, which won a rave from a Fango source who caught an early test screening (see those comments here). No details on DVD special features, if any, have yet been announced; we'll keep you posted. In a related development, it appears that Billy O'Brien's well-reviewed Irish killer-livestock flick ISOLATION will also go the straight-to-disc route via First Look June 26. We'll let you know anything more we hear about this one as well.

Jodi sent a couple of interesting questions to Clint at Moviehole.net and he let Greg McLean himself answer them.
Q. Hi Clint, I was wondering if you can shed any light on the news that 'Rogue' will only get a very limited release in the U.S. on Apr. 20th. I'm a big fan of Michael Vartan, and I live in the New Orleans area. If Rogue will be released to only 500 theatres, I doubt if it would come here. We're probably not a big enough market any more. There hasn't been a trailer or even a poster to be seen. Have the Weinstein's lost interest in this movie? What does Greg McLean think of this? Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much! - Jodi
A. Here's Greg McLean to answer your question: "2350 screens across USA on April 20th. I don't think this is limited release and hope Jodi enjoys the picture! Trailers and poster should be around in next few weeks - so look out for these!"

Original: Thanks to MPAA and Girasol.
Girasol sent us over to the Motion Picture Association of America ("MPAA"), which confirms the "R" rating for "Rogue." Here's some more info from them:
"The movie ratings system is a voluntary system operated by the MPAA and the National Association of Theater Owners (NATO). The ratings are given by a board of parents who comprise the Classification and Rating Administration (CARA). CARA's Board members view each film and, after a group discussion, vote on its rating. The ratings are intended to provide parents with advance information so they can decide for themselves which films are appropriate for viewing by their own children. The Board uses the same criteria as any parent making a judgment: theme, language, violence, nudity, sex and drug use are among content areas considered in the decision-making process."
"R - Restricted, Under 17 Requires Accompanying Parent or Adult Guardian: In the opinion of the Rating Board, this film definitely contains some adult material. Parents are strongly urged to find out more about this film before they allow their children to accompany them. An R-rated film may include strong language, violence, nudity, drug abuse, other elements, or a combination of the above, so parents are counseled in advance to take this advisory rating very seriously."
"Rogue" was given the "R" rating for language and some creature violence.

Rogue (Dimension Films)
Release Date: February 2, 2007
Studio: Dimension Films (The Weinstein Company)
Director: Greg McLean
Screenwriter: Greg McLean
Starring: Michael Vartan, Radha Mitchell, Stephen Curry, John Jarratt, Heather Mitchell, Mia Wasikoska, Sam Worthington
Genre: Horror, Thriller
Plot Summary: Greg McLean's first acclaimed tour de force, "Wolf Creek," took audiences on a frightening, fact based road trip through the darkest parts of Australian Outback and the depraved human mind. Journeying home again, this time to the crocodile infested waters of Australia's remote wetlands, the director's wildlife boat tour is more down-under "Jaws" than "Crocodile Dundee." Joining a beautiful local tour guide (Radha Mitchell) and an American writer on assignment (Michael Vartan), the rest of this thriller's food chain is composed of tourists and adventure seekers alike. Waiting in vain to be rescued on an ever-disappearing parcel of dry land, you will never guess their next move... as terror lies just beneath the surface.

Many of you will have already heard that Juliette and I had our 15 minutes of fame when we were extras in the filming of "Rogue" in Katherine. How ironic that us, 4th generation Australians, played the Asian tourists! All we had to do was get off a bus about a hundred times, and act like tourists.
...
This time I managed to get my whole family in on the act, and it was a lot more fun the second time around. We spent all day getting on a Gorge cruise boat, doing take after take from different angles.

Tale of an American journalist who embarks on an Outback jaunt to gain inspiration for a book on Australian tourism. What he runs across is some scaly trouble with a voracious appetite.
“With any film like this, the monster’s got to be amazing,” McLean notes. “So we’ve been focused on making this animal as realistic as possible, and having seen the most recent pieces—CG and practical—I’m blown away by how close we’ve gotten to making it look real. It’s also our handling of the character of the animal—how it looks and behaves—that will be scary.” As for the gore FX factor, ROGUE will not be sparse on severed limbs, according to the writer/director: “Expect peoples’ bodies getting ripped apart, as well as some intense atmosphere and one hell of a scary crocodile.”

Rogue (Dimension Films): Stop me if you've heard this one before... travellers find themselves trapped by a menace deep in the Australian outback. No, it's not "Wolf Creek" but the new film from the director of "Wolf Creek," as Michael Vartan and Radha Mitchell find themselves terrorized by a ravenous crocodile. And like "Wolf Creek," this film will assault theatres beginning Christmas Day

Original: Thanks to Star News Group.
"It's the story of a bunch of tourists who take a day tour in the Top End and come across a 7.5m-long rogue crocodile, which systematically begins stalking them and popping them off one by one," [actor Stephen Curry] said.
Heading the tour group is Kate, played by Australian actor Radha Mitchell, with whom Pete strikes up a romance.
Mr Curry said the film started off "nice and bubbly", with a few comic characters and a burgeoning romance between Pete and Kate, but the tone soon shifted.
"It kind of lulls you into a false sense of security and ends up really scary," he said.

I got a flyer from an anon source about a new horror film that is going to be made by MUSHROOM PICTURES, ("CUT" and "CHOPPER"). The film is titled ROGUE and is about a crocodile even Mr. Irwin would have trouble with. The flyer reads like so.

From what I can understand the character he plays is a real "take control" type of guy, "a man's man". It should be fun to see MV play a character like this. I thought he did a great job in season 4 when they gave him some rough edges, so he should really be up for the job.
I have to say, I don't know if he gets killed or not! Truthfully, I'm not sure I want to know!
In regards to the movie, my source said that MV had several offers come his way, and this was the one he decided on. Considering the cast, and the writer/director, I'm pretty sure that this is way more than your typical "horror" movie. The script is suppossed to be great, and MV's character will be different then anything he's played before, so it should all be good for him.
