1.11 The Confession
January 6, 2001

|
Thanks to Christy S. and Lori at Vartanetc. Used with permission.
Setting: Warehouse, meeting place of Sydney and Vaughn.
Sydney: As Hassan and I were headed to the mainland, my dad contacted SD-6 and told them that Hassan was dead and that his mission was a success.
Sydney: So it all worked. SD-6 has no idea I was gone. The CIA has Hassan. And my Dad's okay. So thank you.
Vaughn: I didn't do anything.
Sydney: You got me into Cuba. And you know what? You were right.
Vaughn: What about?
Sydney: What happens when someone you care about is in trouble. What you said, that nothing else matters, that it all just goes away. Last week, when I learned what my father did for me, sacrificing Russek, it made me sick. But, now I know I would have done exactly the same thing. You should have seen him.
Vaughn: Your father?
Sydney: Yeah, he was like, he was like a pro. He was good. I mean, I mean the way you talked about him once, what his repuation is, I could see it. In action. He was... impressive.
Vaughn: We got those codes deciphered. Those books your father used to buy for your mother... the ones had imported 25 years ago. Those cirulic codes you found and gave to me, I had NSA look at them.
Sydney: Yeah?
Vaughn: Yeah.
Sydney: What is this?
Vaughn: Directives. Confirmed KGB orders.
Sydney: What kind of orders? What do they mean?
Vaughn: It's a list of aliases, of handles. People.
Sydney: Who?
Vaughn: Those are official code names given by the CIA to over a dozen of our officers, all of whom were killed.
Sydney: What?
Vaughn: 25 years ago. All killed by an unknown foreign agent. An agent the CIA suspected was KGB. Your suspicions, about your father having once worked for the KGB? They're accurate.
Sydney: We don't know that for sure.
Vaughn: We know that your father was being tracked by an FBI counterintelligence group--
Sydney: He said that was routine!
Vaughn: There's nothing routine about that list. There's something very specific about it. Its been a mystery within the agency for over two decades. Who murdered those CIA officers? I'm sorry, but we have our answer now. It was your father. And I'm going to report him.
Setting: CIA safehouse. Hassan is in what is made to look like a living room. We see through an observation window/two way mirror as Vaughn enters the room.
Vaughn: It's not so bad here, is it?
Hassan: This is not the deal I agreed to.
Vaughn: So, what can you tell me about the package?
(Hassan looks at Vaughn blankly, coldly, and says nothing.)
Vaughn: Ah, come on. You're going to have to help me out here. Because under the Patriot Act of 2001, you're not going anywhere. So what I'd recommend is that you and I work together and I'll make sure you stay comfortable. You wouldn't believe it, but there are some incredibly nice prisons in this country. Either that, or you don't cooperate. In which case, let's just say you're not going to like your cellmates so much. Now, you don't have to trust me, but it might save you some misery. What's the package?
Hassan: Listen, I have a wife and a son. They are targets. Not just SD-6, I've made many enemies in the past. Now, you bring them to the United States, give them protection. You do that for me, and I'll tell you whatever you want to know. Everything.
Vaughn: Let me make one thing very clear, Mr. Hassan. The extent to which I am willing to service you is when I offer you a soda. There is no room for negotiation. There are no perks coming your way. You have nothing to gain here.
Hassan: Then neither do you.
Vaughn: Think about that.
Hassan: I don't have to.
Vaughn: I'll give you some time, to think about that.
Setting: Beneath freeway underpass, meeting place of Sydney and Vaughn
Vaughn: Whatever the package is, Hassan's not talking. So, here's the plan. You'll put on the contact lenses, get into Seculis' office, and record the specs. You, not Dixon.
(Vaughn hands Sydney a wooden box with a compact, lighter, and lipstic inside.)
Vaughn: The compact's a camera. The lipstick's a voice recorder. And the lighter's a USB flash-ram drive. Whatever info you can get, get it for us.
(Vaughn hands Sydney some papers.)
Vaughn: And these are some unclassified designs for various weapons. You'll photograph these with whatever camera SD-6 gives you. That's what you'll give them when you get back.
Sydney: Thanks.
Vaughn: Listen, about your father. I know you're reluctant to do anything.
Sydney: I've been thinking a lot about that.
Vaughn: You know what we have to do. We have to report him to Langley. Now, I could do it myself, but those are your books. They'll need your testimony to make a case against him.
Sydney: He might have been part of the KGB. But we don't know what role he played in those murders.
Vaughn: You're kidding yourself and you know that.
Sydney: Let's just say he was guilty. The directives are 25 years old.
Vaughn: There is no Statute of Limitation on murder.
Sydney: We need him right now. We will never destroy SD-6 without my father.
(Vaughn hands Sydney a file stacked with pages of paper. The papers, we find out, are CIA Agent Profiles.)
Vaughn: Those code names in your father's books, they were people. And they risked their lives--all of them-- for this country. And yes it might have been 25 years ago, but for each of those lives lost, others were destroyed.
Sydney: I know.
Vaughn: No, you don't know because you're not thinking about them, you're only thinking of yourself. You made a connection with your father for the first time in your life and turning him in would mean sacrficing that. I understand. But Sydney, we have proof. We know who the victims are--you're holding them in your hands. And we know who the killer was. And we both know the right thing to do.
Sydney: Yes, my father probably got his KGB orders from the books. And yes, it looks like my father was responsible for those deaths. But what you're asking me to do, I just need some time. And not a lot of time--not forever. Just, please. You won't do anything about this without me.
(Vaughn watches Sydney drive away. Once she is gone, he pulls a mini-tape recorder from inside of his jacket. He plays back the last part of the conversation, beginning with "yes, my father probably got his KGB orders from the books...")
Setting: CIA Safehouse. Vaughn and Hassan.
Vaughn: How's the food?
Hassan: [no response]
Vaughn: So, Mr. Hassan, you've had some time to think about it. Do you want to help me out?
Hassan: Screw you.
Vaughn: Screw me?
Hassan: Screw you. I don't talk to you unless you show me some respect.
Vaughn: Let's be honest here. In twenty minutes, you're going to be shipped off to a maximum security prison outside Los Angelos. By 5 p.m., you're going to be someone's after dinner mint. So unless you start cooperating with me, real fast, respect is going to be the least of your problems.
(Vaughn begins to leave the room.)
Hassan: Wait! You still refuse to help get my family out of Argentina.
Vaughn: I told you, that's not part of the deal. But if you help me out, I'll make sure you stay comfortable.
Hassan: I have a stockpile of weapons--not in Egypt. I knew that's where my enemies would look. The package, and other weapons, are in a silo, in Greece, on the isle of Crete.
Setting: L.A. County Blood Drive Van, outside college campus. Meeting place of Sydney and Vaughn.
Sydney: He licked my face.
Vaughn: I understand.
Sydney: No you don't, really. He licked my face! And you wanna know the worst part? Because of him, I didn't succeed. And because of him, Dixon accessed the information. The CIA got nothing. And SD-6 ended up with what they wanted. I want to go to Crete myself. I want to find the stockpile Hassan told you about, get the package, and bring it back.
Vaughn: I just don't feel its the right time for the CIA to send you anywhere without SD-6's knowledge. I mean, we just did that with Cuba. I think its too dangerous.
Sydney: Then we can use my father. He can give Sloane the intel, and we'll make it an SD-6 mission.
Vaughn: Okay. That's not why I called you.
Sydney: I know. Listen, if we turn in my father, that'll jeapordize what you and I are doing here. It might even get me--
(Vaughn replays the tape he made of their last conversation. Sydney sates at him in disbelief, and then anger. Vaughn then stops the tape.)
Vaughn: I figured turning in your father would be too difficult for you. So I made this tape last time we were together. I was going to play it for Devlin, and, maybe use it in court someday. But I couldn't bring myself to do that.
(Vaughn removes the mini-cassette from the player and hands it to a stunned Sydney.)
Vaughn: I'm only telling you this because I owed you that, for some reason. I know this is a personal thing for you. The idea of reporting your father is a horrible position to be in. But its a personal thing for me too, Sydney. Those files I showed you of the CIA officers who were killed (retrieves another CIA officer profile page), I left one out.
(Hands page to Sydney.)
(Reviews CIA profile page. The camera shows the page and we see the name "William Vaughn" underneath the picture on the profile. Sydney looks saddened.)
Vaughn: I made an appointment to meet with Devlin on Monday, to report your father. Are you with me?
(Sydney silently nods.)
Setting: Sydney is crouching in the wildly grown grass outside Hassan's silo in Crete. She is watching Seculis leave the silo through night-vision binoculors. She is miked into communication with Vaughn back at the CIA office's obvseravation/tech room.
Sydney: Secoris is leaving the bunker.
Vaughn: We've got him on satelite relay, Syd.
Sydney: See any guards?
Vaughn: Hassan says there won't be any. They building was designed to look abandonned. The ion refractor is in a secured depot underground.
Sydney: Copy that.
(Sydney leaves her crouch and makes her way to the silo.)
Vaughn: (To Agent Weiss.) Go infrared.
Weiss: (Nods, views screen.) Its clear.
Vaughn: Syd, you're clear.
Sydney: Okay, I'm in. Where to?
Vaughn: There's a starewell on your left. Go down to the lower level.
Sydney: Its a deadend.
Hassan: There is a valve, halfway up on the left. She needs to turn it clockwise.
Vaughn: Syd, turn to your left. There's a valve. Turn it clockwise.
Sydney: Copy.
Hassan: A panel will open, she'll find a keypad behind it.
Vaughn: You should find a keypad.
Sydney: What's the code?
Vaughn: (To Hassan) Code?
Hassan: (Hesitates.) Pi to six digits.
Vaughn: (To Sydney) The code is 314159.
(Sydney enters the code, and a door slides open. She steps inside and looks around a large room filled with boxes and crates.)
Sydney: Where do I look?
Vaughn: Hassan says to look for black shipping cases.
Sydney: I found the refractor.
(Sydney retrieves the refractor. Door closes automatically. Sydney can't get to it fast enough.)
Sydney: Vaughn, I think this is a set-up!
(The room's lights go down, ceiling sprinklers lower.)
Sydney: Vaughn, what's going on? The room just went into lockdown!
Vaughn: (To Hassan) What the hell did you just do?
Hassan: I gave you the wrong code. Your agent has activated an anti-intuder device.
(Camera shows Seculis driving, being notified by silo's security that an intruder has been found. He returns to silo.)
Hassan: In a few seconds, the room will be filled with gasoline. Exactly one minute after that, a flame will ignite.
Sydney: Vaughn, talk to me!
Vaughn: (Draws handgun, aiming at Hassan's head.) Give me the deactivation code!
Sydney: (Gasoline starts pouring out of the sprinkers.) Vaughn!
Hassan: Not until I have an agreement, in writing, signed by your superiors, guaranteeing that my family will be allowed entrance into the witness protection program.
Vaughn: (Releases safety on gun.) Give me the code you son of a bitch or I'll pull the trigger!
Hassan: I have no doubt that's true.
(Vaughn fumes, staring coldly at Hassan. He rips his headset off.)
Vaughn: (To Weiss.) Start typing!
Weiss: Me?!? (Begins typing.)
(Vaughn runs out of observation tech room and up several flights of stairs. Meanwhile, we see Sydney coughing and nearly gagging on the gasoline that is raining into the weapons arsenal. We also see Weiss continue to type the protection order.)
Hassan: You misspelled her name.
Weiss: Shut up!
(Vaughn arrives at Devlin's office and barges in.)
Vaughn: Sorry, Mr. Devlin.
Devlin: What are you doing?
Vaughn: If I don't get your signature on a protection order for Aninni Hassan's family in the next 40 seconds, Sydney Bristow will die.
(Vaughn and Devlin storm into the observation tech room. Weiss hands the protection order to Devlin, who tries to sign it. His pen is dead. He's handed another and then signs the order.)
Vaughn: Give me the code!
Hassan: 766153
Vaughn: (Replaces the headset.) Code is 766153.
(Sydney makes her way to the code panel and enters 766153. The lockdown is reversed.)
Sydney: Vaughn, thank you!
(The bunker door opens to reveal Seculis, aiming a gun at Sydney.)
Sydney: Don't shoot! Don't shoot! The room is flooded with gasoline!
(Seculis puts down the gun and pulls out a knife.)
Seculis: What the hell are you doing?
(The two start fighting. The fight moves over by the code panel. Seculis tries a final time to stab Sydney, who ducks the knife. The knife is thrust into the code panel, setting off small sparks. Secoris looks up in fear. Sydney grabs the package and makes a run for the door. Seculis screams. Sydney no sooner gets outside the silo than it explodes.)
Setting: Nondescript office building, downtown L.A. Sydney stands sipping a coffee and looking into a shop window. Vaughn approaches and grabs what a violin case off the bench behind Sydney. This case contains the information Sydney retrieved in Crete.
Vaughn: You're amazing.
Sydney: I am not amazing.
Vaughn: You did a great job. You sure you're ready to meet with Devlin?
Sydney: Yeah.
Vaughn: Okay. Taxi will pick you up at 3 o'clock, northwest corner of Westward and Wilshire. We'll get you into the agency through the underground garage.
Sydney: Okay.
(Vaughn watches as Sydney walks away.)
Setting: Conference room, CIA Headquarters, Los Angelos branch. Sydney and Vaughn are already seated.
Vaughn: Sure you're alright?
Sydney: (Silently nods. Takes in a deep breath.)
(People start to trickle into the conference room.)
Sydney: Its a big meeting.
Vaughn: I know. I don't get it.
(Devlin arrives. Jack walks in. Sydney and Vaughn are surpised to see Jack. Everyone is now seated.)
Jack: This is CIA Director Devlin, Deputy Director Tucker, Executive Director Gursner, and these are Senior Officers Hailey, Stafford, and Cohen. I knew weeks ago that my file had been pulled. And that you were suspicious of my activities 25 years ago regarding the KGB. When I learned that you had scheduled a meeting with Mr. Devlin regarding my history, I knew that it was time. Let me say in advance that I'm sorry to make this such a public display, but I thought it was important to do this in front of these people because they already know the truth. And because, I didn't think that you would believe me otherwise. Those cirulic codes that you found in those books, yes, they were order from the KGB and yes, they were orders to kill. An agent received those orders and carried them out. Murdered officers of the CIA, including your father, Mr. Vaughn. All this is true. But Sydney, I was not that agent. Your mother was.
(Syd and Vaughn each look shell-shocked.)
