Thanks to Christy and Lori at Vartanetc. Used with permission.
Setting: Sydney and Vaughn at the familiar warehouse, meeting in progress..
Vaughn: Does this [shows Syd a camera] look familiar?
Sydney: Its the same kind of camera I left behind in Argentina.
Vaughn: It is that camera. The CIA sent in a team to retrieve it last week. You only took a few shots of the Rambaldi book.
Sydney: I know.
Vaughn: But we did learn a lot from those pictures.
Sydney: Like what?
Vaughn: [chuckles] I've got this aunt, Aunt Trish--she's the insane one in the family. She speaks to the dead, she goes to readings, she's a crop circle worshipper--
Sydney: Aunt Trish?
Vaughn: Yeah. This whole Rambaldi story reminds me of something she would tell me about. Anyway, we know that Rambaldi was a sixteenth century inventor who seemed to have had an almost psychic vision of technology. This book, based on the images you took, seems to be some sort of instruction manual. Now to what, we don't know. This is written in Italian, on the second page. [Hands Sydney a print-out of one of the photographed page.] In there, at the bottom, Rambaldi refers to the one hundred segments.
Sydney: Meaning what?
Vaughn: Well, it continues on a page we don't have yet. So, your countermission is the same as in Argentina. When you get the Rambaldi book, photograph the pages and deliver the originals to SD-6 and the photos to us.
Sydney: Just don't screw it up this time. Got it. [smiles]
Vaughn: Your father's been reporting that Sloane's spent a lot of time at home.
Sydney: Yeah, his wife, Emily. She's sick.
Vaughn: You two used to be close, right?
Sydney: We still are. Less so, since she was diagnosed--she's been a little reclusive. Actually, I haven't seen her since before I learned the truth about her husband.
Vaughn: I think this is a real opportunity. We'd like you to call Emily, tell her you'd like to see her again, and get invited to their house.
Sydney: You want me to plant a bug? Vaughn, she's dying of cancer.
Vaughn: Yes, I know.
Sydney: So you're asking me to use this woman?
Vaughn: She will never know.
Sydney: But I will.
Vaughn: Look, we've been trying to plant a listening device in SD-6. It's pointless. That office uses every possible counter-surveillance technique. Sloane's house might be more vulnerable.
Sydney: This isn't a logistical question. This is a moral one.
Vaughn: A moral one? Sydney, you're a spy. This is hardly the darkest decision you've had to make.
Sydney: But what you're not hearing is Emily is my friend. Despite her husband, she is my friend who is dying. I mean, does this not seem at all wrong to you?
Vaughn: Why does this seem wrong to you?
Sydney: Because she's innocent. She is a good person.
Vaughn: Well then what she doesn't know--what she will never know--is that this is one of the last opportunities she has to do something good.
Scene changes to Sydney at home, talking to Emily on the phone.
Setting: The next day, Sydney at home, Emily calls and invites Syd to dinner at the Sloanes' residence. Emily tells her to bring a friend. Then the scene changes to Syd and Vaughn meeting at the usual warehouse.
Vaughn: And you accepted?
Sydney: Not at first. But Emily's sick--I couldn't say "no." And I knew you wanted me to anyway.
Vaughn: Yeah.
[Vaughn hands Syd a small black box. Syd opens the box and we see what looks like a paperclip.]
Sydney: This is a bug?
Vaughn: It's good, huh? You should see the guys who made it. Its like they've never seen sunlight.
Sydney: Hmm. You should meet Marshall. Where do you want this?
Vaughn: Sloane's got an office in his home.
Sydney: Um-hmm.
Vaughn: That's where we want it. Especially not that SD-6 has the Rambaldi book. The CIA's been studying those photos you took.
Sydney: And they turned out alright?
Vaughn: There's one blank page. Well CIA Sci-Tech says that of the few Rambaldi documents they've recovered the 47th page is always particularly significant. This blank page was number 47. Your father's strategizing on how to get it out of SD-6 analysis, replace it with a counterfit. But, in the meantime we're just hoping to learn something with that bug.
Sydney: Okay.
Vaughn: You said Emily invited you and a friend?
Sydney: Um-humm.
Vaughn: Are you taking anyone?
Scene changes to Will. Sydney calls him on his cell phone and invites him to Sloane's house for dinner.
Setting: At the usual warehouse, Vaughn and Jack look to be talking to each other as Syd arrives.
Sydney: Hey.
Vaughn: Sloane brought the Rambaldi book home.
Jack: I met with him earlier. He showed me the book. He was so taken with what he'd seen, he wanted to show it to you himself.
Sydney: So he brought it to his house?
Jack: Yes. It'll be there tonight.
Sydney: Why didn't he just wait until I was at SD-6 on Monday?
Jack: An Alliance courier's en route to Los Angelos. They're taking the book to Germany. They have a cluster of labs in Munich--advanced analysis they can't perform here.
Sydney: Wait a minute--the blank page? You want me to make a switch.
Vaughn: Yeah. If we don't do it tonight, the courier will arrive in the morning and we'll lose our shot at getting that page anytime soon.
Sydney: Doesn't this seem a little risky to you? Making a move like this at Sloane's house, while he's there, without back-up?
Vaughn: Oh, well you will have back-up. Your father's going too.
Jack: I can help you tonight. Emily believes that her husband is COO of the bank. If he wants to show you the book, he'll have to do that in private--most likely in his office.
Sydney: [To Vaughn] Where you want me to plant the bug.
Vaughn: That's right.
Jack: If we assume that's where the book is being kept, it could be an ideal scenario. During dinner, Vaughn will call your cell phone posing as a friend in need. You'll excuse yourself, go to Sloane's office, get into his safe, and make the switch.
Vaughn: Now Sloane's vault is an advanced cussion model. The guys who made the paperclip bug came up with this.
[Vaughn reaches into his suit jacked and hands Sydney what looks like a fancy tube of lipstick.]
Vaughn: It overrides the circuitry, tricks the safe into believing you entered the correct combination. They say its bitchin so, I'm assuming, its bitchin.
Sydney: I don't know about this plan. I mean, not only does it put me in danger, and you [looking at Jack], but I'm taking Will tonight.
[Vaughn looks at Sydney, shocked.]
Jack: You're doing what?
Sydney: Yeah. Emily told me to bring someone. Why?
Jack: Nothing. [Jack looks over to Vaughn.] I should leave. [To Sydney] I'll see you there. [Jack walks away.]
Vaughn: Look, if you feel you can make the switch, do it. Just use your discretion. [Brief silence.] So you're taking Will?
Sydney: Yeah.
Vaughn: Well, you look really pretty.
Sydney: Thank you. [Smiles]
Setting: Sloane's house, during dinner. Emily has been reciting Will's prize-winning story, which sounds suspiciously like "Grapes of Wrath." Anyhow, Emily gets a pain in her chest. Sloane goes over to her, everyone is silent and watching. Syd's cell phone rings.
Sydney: Excuse me. Sorry. [To caller] Hello?
Vaughn: Hi, its Francie.
Sydney: [to Will] Francie.
Will: Oh.
Sydney: [to rest of party] Excuse me, I have to take this call. I'm sorry. [To "Francie" as Sydney leaves the room.] Hey, Sweetie. [Sydney is now in Sloane's office, still on phone.] Okay, I'm in. See you at the dead drop.
Sydney hangs up the phone, opens the safe, makes the switch, spins on her heel, hides the code breaker and grabs her cell phone just as she spots Sloane standing by the door. He comments on how pale she looks, and she says that her friend's going through some pretty bad stuff. Sloane doesn't press the issue, but his face reads as suspicious.
Setting: CIA Headquarters, LA Division. Vaughn's office.
Vaughn: [To his assistant as he's packing his briefcase.] Call Driscoll. Tell him I got his email, that he's a sick man, and that we have the rink for tomorrow night.
Cohen: [Standing at the door.] Mr. Vaughn?
Vaughn: Yeah. I'm late for a meeting.
Cohen: [Walks into office.] You're going to want to cancel that meeting. I'm Officer Cohen with Sci- Tech. We, uh, we figured out how to read the Rambaldi document.
Vaughn: Yeah?
Cohen: Yeah.
[Cohen hands Vaughn a folder. Vaughn opens the folder and studies the page. He's stunned.]
Vaughn: [To assistant] Cancel my meeting.
Setting: The usual warehouse. Vaughn is already there as Sydney arrives.
Sydney: I came as fast as I could. Vaughn, what's up?
Vaughn: Remember that vile of liquid that Cole was after in the SD-6 vault?
Sydney: Yeah. Of course.
Vaughn: We used it on the blank page to get the ink to show up.
Sydney: So it worked.
Vaughn: Yeah.
Sydney: So what is it?
Vaughn: Well, we're not sure. Uh, we don't know what it means. That's sort of the problem.
Sydney: Okay, so you're acting really freaky.
Vaughn: I have the page with me. I'd like you to see it.
Sydney: Okay.
Vaughn hands Syd the folder. She opens the folder and looks at the page. She's stunned. The camera pans and we see the page contains a drawing of Sydney--or someone looking very much like her--and some handwriting.
