1.18 Masquerade

April 7, 2002

Thanks to Christy and Lori at Vartanetc. Used with permission.

Setting: Sydney has just told her father that she wants to find her mother, Laura Bristow. After an intense discussion in which Jack voices his concerns about the idea and his refusal to help Sydney, she goes home. We see her lying in bed as a voice over is heard in the background.
Sydney: I have this memory of my father. I was maybe five years old. We were camping with my mother. I broke my leg and he picked me up and carried me miles back to the car. I remember looking up at him and thinking he was the strongest man in the world.
[Sydney reaches for her cell phone and dials a number.]
Scene: Now we are in an empty warehouse. Vaughn and Sydney are in "the cage" while sitting they are sitting on wooden crates, facing each other.
Sydney: Seeing him there in the car, looking so damaged, I had never seen him like that. The idea that I want to find my mother -- it scares him.
Vaughn: Well, I don't exactly have a neutral point of view on the subject of your mother. But your father's got a point.
Sydney: I know. And maybe I'm being reckless, or selfish, or masochistic. But if my mother is alive, then I just have to know that.
[Vaughn momentarily glares at Sydney.]
Sydney: Can you help me get everything the CIA's got on her?
Vaughn: [Looking down.] Actually I can't.
[Vaughn looks back up at Sydney. Sydney's brow furrows.]
Vaughn: All information concerning her has been classified Omega 17 by the FBI -- including her connection to the Rambaldi Prophecy.
Sydney: Dozens of agents must be looking for her. Maybe hundreds. And they're not going to let me be part of that operation, are they?
Vaughn: Sydney, I know you need help. But this time, I just don't have it to give. I'm sorry.
[Sydney looks away.]

Scene: Vaughn is briefing Sydney as they stand outside, next to their parked cars, at a forest/park location next to their.
Vaughn: Our Station Chief in Vienna got your dead drop. I read your debrief. I'm sorry you had a rough time at the embassy.
Sydney: Thanks. If anything turns up on the microchip, I'll let you know.
Vaughn: [Nods] The agent you extracted, Noah Hicks, you mentioned him in the initial background report you wrote when you first made contact with the CIA.
Sydney: We met when I was a trainee.
[Vaughn almost imperceptibly shifts his shoulders, as if his neck were stiff.]
Sydney: [Watches Vaughn before continuing.] We actually dated for a while.
Vaughn: [Slightly raises eyebrows.] Really. [Nods, looks down at ground.]
Sydney: We kept it under the radar. SD-6 discourages fraternization among agents.
Vaughn: So does the CIA. [Slightly nods, voice cracks just the tiniest bit.] Oh, there's one more thing. Do you know where your father's been lately? Sydney: I talked to him an hour ago. Why?
Vaughn: Krenchmer's left two call signals for a meet but we haven't received confirmation yet. Is he okay?
