Thanks to Christy and Lori at Vartanetc. Used with permission.
Scene: Denpasar. Picking up where last week left off, Sydney and Sark are at gunpoint. Dixon's expression indicates that he recognizes Sydney. Vaughn and another CIA agent are on a balcony overlooking the scene.
Vaughn: Take position over there, but cover fire only. I don't want Bristow hurt!
[Vaughn runs closer to the meeting area while the second CIA agent is shown running into a grassy field to get into better shot range. Dixon still has Sark and Syd at gunpoint. Vaughn takes position on an upper level walkway above the meeting area and tosses down a hand grenade. Dixon spot it and runs for cover behind a chair just as it explodes. Sark and Sydney are thrown to the ground by the explosion. The CIA sniper opens fire on Dixon and the other SD-6 man. Dixon and the second SD-6 agent fire back. Syd helplessly watches as Sark runs away.]
Sydney: I couldn't make the switch. Sark's got the real ampule.
Vaughn: I'm on him. Head to the extraction point.
[Vaughn leaves his position on the walkway and runs after Sark. Sydney takes off. Dixon stops firing.]
Dixon: Cover me!
[Dixon runs after Sydney.]
[We see Sark running through a bustling Denpasar crowd. Vaughn is close behind, still on the upper level walkway. We then see Sydney running with Dixon close behind. Sydney stops in front of an iron gate. Dixon closes in on her.]
Dixon: Freeze! Turn around. Hands on your head.
[Sydney places her hands on her head. We then see Sark still fleeing through the Denpasar crowd. Vaughn comes to a spot in the walkway that is not closed in by a railing. He jumps down to ground level and grabs Sark. He pushes Sark into the iron gate in front of them and smackes Sark's head against it, knocking him unconscious. Sark drops to the ground. Then we return to Sydney, hands on her head and Dixon approaching ever closer with his gun still drawn.]
Dixon: I don't want to hurt you.
[With her back still turned to him, Sydney smacks the gun out of Dixon's hand and kicks him to the ground, he kicks back. Meanwhile, Vaughn is handcuffing Sark to the iron gate.]
Vaughn: Freelancer, are you at the extraction point yet?
[We see Syd and Dixon still fighting. Vaughn goes through the inner pockets on Sark's jacket, finally finding the real ampoule and placing the same into his own pocket.]
Vaughn: Eagle Eye, I got the ampule!
[We now see Weiss in an observation/tech room in the CIA Los Angeles headquarters.]
Weiss: I've got you five by--
Vaughn: I need a twenty on Freelancer.
Weiss: You cannot leave Sark until he's secure!
Vaughn: Dammit, where is she!
[Sydney and Dixon are still fighting. Sydney grabs Dixon's arm and twists it back. Dixon is wincing but manages to retrieve a knife from his sock with his free arm. He slashes backwards, slicing across the upper part of Sydney's right arm. He backkicks her into the iron gate behind her. She falls to the ground. He picks his gun up off the ground and aims it again at Sydney. Sydney briefly looks at her arm, spotting the blood on her arm. Dixon is ready to pull the trigger. Vaughn runs up from behind hits Dixon in the back of his skull with the butt of Vaughn's handgun. Dixon drops to the ground. Sydney gets to her feet, again looking at the knife wound on her arm, and watches Dixon fall.]
Vaughn: Go.
[Sydney looks at Vaughn seemingly in shock.]
Vaughn: Go!
[Sydney opens the iron gate and runs out. Vaughn runs back to where he had Sark handcuffed. Sark is now gone. The handcuff remains. Vaughn scans the area but finds no trace of Sark to follow.]
Scene: CIA Los Angeles Headquarters, Vaughn's office. Vaughn is looking at a file when Weiss comes in and slams the door behind him.
Weiss: Guess who just tore me a new one.
[Vaughn looks up at Weiss.]
Weiss: Devlin. Now ask me why.
Vaughn: [confused] Why?
Weiss: Because I took a bullet for you today.
[Vaughn shakes his head, he still doesn't understand.]
Weiss: They want to know why you left Sark when he wasn't secured yet.
[Vaughn casts his eyes to the floor.]
Weiss: I said I told you to. I misread the feed from the satellite. I thought the recovery team was nearby.
Vaughn: [sheepishly] Thank you.
Weiss: I lied to save your ass.
Vaughn: You didn't have to do that.
Weiss: [looking away] That's what partners do for each other.
Vaughn: I said thank you.
Weiss: I don't want your thanks. [sighs] I want it to stop.
Vaughn: Look, Sydney's my responsibility--
Weiss: Mike, I'm not going to trivialize your relationship with her by calling it a crush.
Vaughn: [indignant] A crush?
Weiss: But whatever it is, it's starting to affect me. And if that sounds selfish to you, I was hoping to retire fully vested.
[Vaughn silently looks down as if he doesn't know what to say.]
Weiss: I know you genuinely care for her. I do, too. But there is a line that we have been sworn not to cross. We're about a mile past that.
Vaughn: [sighs] I don't know how to be Sydney's handler without making it personal.
Weiss: Figure out a way.
[Vaughn is sullen. Weiss leaves the office.]
Scene: Vaughn is waiting for Sydney in the familiar warehouse/storage facility.
Sydney: [walking toward Vaughn] Please tell me that my countermission is to grab Khasinau.
Vaughn: It's not.
Sydney: [still walking] Well, it should be. I'm going to be this close [pinches fingers together to indicate] to him and nobody wants me to take him into custody.
[Sydney is now standing in front of Vaughn.]
Vaughn: SD-6 must not get the Rambaldi document. Now, in transit to your extraction point, you'll replace what Dixon took from the vault with these.
[Vaughn hands Sydney blank parchment pages.]
Sydney: That's it? Just switch the pages?
Vaughn: Yes. These are counterfeit. Do you have any questions about the mission?
[Sydney looks up from the counterfeits to Vaughn. She is concerned.]
Sydney: [mockingly formal] No, I do not. [still looking concerned] Vaughn, what's going on?
Vaughn: Nothing. Do you have any questions?
Sydney: [bemused smile] Yes. I want to know what's going on with you. You're acting -- not like yourself. [Sydney places the counterfeit pages into her briefbag.]
Vaughn: I'm fine. But I should go. [Vaughn turns his back to Sydney and grabs his briefcase from the table behind them.] Good luck.
[Vaughn walks away.]
Sydney: Thanks. [Syndey does not turn to face him. She is still perplexed.]
Scene: Vaughn and Sydney in warehouse/storage facility. In the previous scene, Sloane had expressed to Sydney his gratitute for her not reporting Emily to SD-6 security and said that it was more than he did for her with Danny.
Vaughn: Please tell me you're not actually feeling sympathy for Arvin Sloane?
Sydney: No. It's just the first time I've seen him express regret for what he did to Danny.
Vaughn: He wouldn't hesitate to kill you if he knew we were having this conversation.
Sydney: You're right.
Vaughn: Anyway, I read your debrief. So did Devlin. We'll deal with the loss of the Rambaldi document later. But first you should know that, uh, Office of Securities is drawing up a constigency plan to keep Will Tippin safe.
Sydney: What kind of constigencies?
Vaughn: Witness protection. Worst-case scenario: recruitment.
Sydney: Absolutely not!
Vaughn: Sydney, we have to cover everything.
Sydney: I can't believe I'm hearing this.
Vaughn: Hopefully it won't come to this.
Sydney: You're not bringing him into this life!
Vaughn: He is in this life now whether you like it or not.
Sydney: He is my friend. He is, like, one of my best friends.
Vaughn: I understand that.
Sydney: No, you don't. You get to tell your friends that you work for the CIA while I go home and look desperately for a tiny moment that I can be honest with anyone about anything.
[Sydney brings her hand up to her face. Vaughn looks away momentarily.]
Sydney: Now that Will knows the truth, he's never going to trust me again.
[Sydney pauses and looks down thoughtfully.]
Sydney: You should have seen his face in Paris. It was like he was looking at a stranger.
Vaughn: But he wasn't. He was looking at you. Maybe for the first time, he was looking at you.
[Sydney silently nods and looks down.]
