1.22 Almost Thirty Years

May 12, 2002

Thanks to Christy and Lori at Vartanetc. Used with permission.

Scene: Sydney has now been contacted by Sark regarding Will's kidnapping. She then met with her father and briefed him on her conversation with Sark. Sydney is then beeped, and Jack tells her not to say anything about the phone call from Sark when she meets with Vaughn. Jack believes there is a mole in the CIA and doesn't want to take the chance that the mole will have access to that intel.
Now in the warehouse/storage facility, Sydney is sitting with her head in her hands and is obviously distressed. Vaughn attempts to counsel her.
Vaughn: [pacing] Sydney, I'm so sorry about this. But there's no reason to assume the worst! They used tranquilizers on the security team, which means they weren't out for blood. If this is a kidnapping --
[Vaughn pulls chair over in front of Sydney and takes a seat.]
Vaughn: They'll contact us.
Sydney: [face in hands, eyes cast at floor] I'm just so scared for him.
[Sydney pauses thoughtfully, then looks up at Vaughn with resolve.]
Sydney: You'll contact me if you hear anything?
[Vaughn is silent as he studies Sydney's expression.]
Sydney: Vaughn?
Vaughn: What's going on?
Sydney: What do you mean?
[Vaughn slightly clenches his jaw and remains silent.]

Scene: CIA Los Angeles Headquarters, Weiss' office. Weiss is sitting in front of his computer, doing some paperwork, while Vaughn is pacing in front of him.
Vaughn: I haven't known Sydney that long, but I feel like I have. Like I know her well enough to know that she doesn't just accept problems -- she tries to fix them.
Weiss: So, you think she'll try to get her friend back by using back channels?
Vaughn: Maybe.
Weiss: Why wouldn't she tell you?
Vaughn: The safehouse was compromised. She doesn't exactly trust the CIA right now -- would you?
Weiss: [thoughtful pause] Trust is a tricky thing.
Vaughn: [looks suspiciously at Weiss] What does that mean?
Weiss: I think you need to fill Devlin in on what you've been thinking about Sydney.
Vaughn: Not a chance.
Weiss: Michael--
[Weiss gets up and walks toward door.]
Vaughn: What, fill him in on conjecture?
[Weiss stops and faces Vaughn.]
Weiss: I know this is a difficult time for you.
Vaughn: What are you saying?
Weiss: Do not let your concern for Sydney get ahead--
Vaughn: [speaking over Weiss] Eric, that's not--
Weiss: Ahead of your responsibility to the Agency.
Vaughn: [voice raised] That is not what I'm doing here!
[Haladki stands at the door and interrupts the two.]
Haladki: Hey!
[Weiss turns around to look at the interruption.]
Haladki: My investigation is on a schedule. You have an appointment with me -- you're late.
Weiss: Yeah, I didn't think you'd mind.
Haladki: Hey, guess what? I do!
[Weiss looks back and Vaughn and they glare at each other. Weiss then turns to leave and brushes past Haladki, checking him in the left shoulder. Haladki casts an irritated look at Weiss as he passes, then looks at Vaughn with the same irritated look. Haladki then leaves, and Vaughn glares at the now empty doorspace.]

Scene: At this point, Jack and Sydney have devised a plan to retrieve the items The Man wants in exchange for Will. Sydney is to go into SD-6 storage and retrieve the Rambaldi page Dixon snagged last week from that club in Paris. Jack will go to CIA storage and retrieve the ampoule. Sydney drives to a pier, puts on a wet suit and some scuba gear, and dives into the water. Dixon is parked in his car watching her through his rearview mirror as she disappears into the water. We see Sydney underwater welding an opening into a duct-like passage.
Meanwhile, in a conference room at Los Angeles' CIA Headquarters. Devlin and Haladki sit facing Weiss and Vaughn.
Vaughn: So, I'm confused. Why was I called in here?
Devlin: Mr. Weiss mentioned that you were suspicious of Sydney Bristow.
[Vaughn looks over at Weiss with a hurt expression, then returns his gaze to the conference room table.]
Sydney is now crawling up from a duct into a lab of some sort while Jack drives to CIA storage, flashes his credentials, and is allowed inside.
Back the CIA conference room.
Vaughn: When I mentioned I was suspicious, I simply meant that Sydney seemed troubled.
Haladki: But that isn't the word you used, is it?
[Vaughn says nothing in response.]
Sydney makes her way further into the lab/storage cell and retrieves the Rambaldi page, placing the same into a water-proof document holder. Jack is shown walking through a storage room with banker boxes stacked nearly to the ceiling.
Back at the CIA conference room.
Vaughn: What I said was I feel I have an understanding of Sydney Bristow and that she doesn't just accept problems, she tries to fix them.
Haladki: And that perhaps Ms. Bristow and her father are trying to secure the release of Mr. Tippin on their own?
Vaughn: It was just a conversation. I have no--
Devlin: Is it your opinion, Mr. Vaughn, that Ms. Bristow is hiding something from you? Hiding something from the Central Intelligence Agency?
[Vaughn casts Weiss a look of consternation and quiet anger. Weiss returns with a look of firm resolve.]
Vaughn: [begrudgingly] Yes, sir.
Jack retrieves the ampoule and makes his way out of the CIA storage facility. Devlin contacts the storage facility with orders to detain Jack, but he is too late. Jack has already left. Sydney has now made her way to the pier and she removes her scuba gear. Dixon approaches and confronts Sydney on what she is doing, who she is working for. Sydney does not tell him, but assures him she is not betrayed the United States. This is not good enough for Dixon; he wants a reason not to report her to security section. They do not part on good terms and this matter is not resolved.

Scene: After brushing some of the Rambaldi solution over the page, Jack and Syd see that it is a decription of and instructions for the Mueller device that Sydney snagged from Taipei in the first episode. Sydney tells Jack about her confrontation with Dixon and she is told that they will deal with that catastrophe when and if they have to. Jack then tells her not to go home. While Jack is handling the mole situation, which involves Haladki and some long-deserved retribution, Sydney goes to the train station.
At the train station, Sydney sits with her legs curled up under her. An announcer calls for boarders of a departing train. Sydney appears lost in thought.
Vaughn: Hi.
[Sydney looks over to see Vaughn sitting behind her.]
Sydney: Hi.
[Sydney then turns her head around and faces forward.]
Sydney: How did you find me?
Vaughn: You told me a couple of months ago. When you feel the need to disappear, you go to the observatory. But the observatory was closed. And then I remembered you said the pier calms you down, but you weren't there. And you weren't at the bluffs -- and the palisades, either.
Sydney: You didn't really go to all those places.
Vaughn: Yeah, I did. And then I remembered you liked the train station, too. "Normal people go to their normal jobs."
[Sydney smiles slightly and seems touched.]
Sydney: I can't believe you remember that.
Vaughn: He's contacted you, hasn't he? Khasinau? And he wants the page. [nods slightly] And you're going to give it to him.
[Sydney's eyes are welling up with tears but she does not succumb to them.]
Sydney: You came here to stop me.
[Vaughn pauses thoughtfully before continuing.]
Vaughn: My father used to keep a diary. And when I was a kid I used to say, "hey Dad, only girls keep diaries," and he'd just -- just laugh. He was a really good guy, my dad. Yeah. [pauses] But he was too hard on himself. I mean, he was such a company guy. Whenever he slipped up even in the slightest way he took it so personally. [sigh] There were a few operations -- his last one among them -- that he questioned. Operations he refused to participate in -- but only in his diary. He'd write out what he wanted to say to the CIA director -- things he could never say in real life. He was a company man, and I loved him very much. But it killed him. Never questioning orders. His blind devotion to the job.
[Sydney closes her eyes and looks down, obviously saddened.]
Vaughn: If you're doing what I think you're doing, I'm in. If you need me.
[Sydney takes a deep breath as the tears in her eyes are ready to spill.]
Sydney: Thank you.

Scene: On what appears to be an army airplane, Sydney, Jack, and Vaughn are reviewing their plan for the mission to Taipei. They are studying surveilance photos and the Rambaldi page.
Sydney: Who told you about this?
Jack: I found a source. Khasinau's already built one of these devices [indicating on the Rambaldi page] and it's in this warehouse [indicating on surveillance photo], in an underground lab, room forty-seven. The meeting with Sark is scheduled to take place in two hours from now. That means by the time I hand over the page in exchange for Tippin, you must have destroyed not only the device they've built, but the lab itself.
Sydney: Destroying the device should be easy -- it's the size of a shoe. What about the lab?
Jack: Here.
[Jack hands a bag to Sydney.]
Jack: It's a red mercury charge with a mechanical fuse.
[A buzzer goes off and a red light flashes, grabbing all three agents' attention.]
Sydney: I'll see what they need.
[Sydney moves to front of plane.]
Jack: I understand the risks you've taken here. And you have my respect for that.
[Vaughn remains silent and gently nods. He seems afraid or at least deeply concerned. He offers a weak, if not forced, smile in response.]

Scene: A dance club in Taipei. Sydney and Vaughn are dressed appropriately in punk attire.
Sydney and Vaughn weave their way through the crowd of dancing club patrons, walking side by side. One man walks between them and turns on his heal to leer at Sydney, obviously hitting on her. Vaughn looks on momentarily, and then walks up to the local and pushes him away. Sydney beams. Vaughn reaches for Sydney's hand and the two walk through the rest of the dancing crowd holding hands. They make their way to a backroom guarded only by a padlock. Sydney easily breaks the padlock and the two enter. They stop at a steel wall/door where Sydney holds the flashlight as Vaughn welds through.
Meanwhile, Jack has driven to the meeting point as Sark drives up. Sark shows Jack that Tippin is alive -- bloodied and beaten -- but alive. Jack shows Sark the Rambaldi page which has already been exposed. Sark is not pleased with that, but doesn't make much of an argument.
Back at the club, Sydney and Vaughn have made their way into the underground control room.
Vaughn: When I activate the surge inducer, you'll have ten seconds to cross the hallway before the system resets.
[Vaughn holds out the explosive devise Jack gave Sydney. She takes it.]
Sydney: I'll go radio silent until I'm in the lab.
Vaughn: Good luck.
Sydney: You, too.
[The two go their separate ways.]
Meanwhile, Sark takes the Rambaldi document in exchange for Will. Sark drives off, and a badly beaten Will stands motionless and silent for a moment. He then approaches Jack and hugs him, thanking him and breaking down. Jack awkwardly puts an arm around Will in response.
Back at the club, Vaughn is in the control room. He disables the video signals. Sydney is in a hallway, making her way to the lab. She is interceded by two guards both of whom she fights and is able to render them unconscious. She runs for Lab 47, sees a red button and pushes it. A door opens to the lab and she walks inside, looking stunned. The camera pans over and we see a rather large red golf-ball like object floating inside of a black devise. It's the Mueller devise, similar to the one Sydney stole in the first episode, but very, very much larger.
Sydney: Vaughn... it's bigger than I thought.
Vaughn: Syd, I can't hear you!
Sydney: If I turn this thing off, I'm going to have to swim out of here.
[The reception Vaughn hears is crackling.]
Vaughn: You're breaking up. Syd? I'm coming down!
[Vaughn removes his equipment and heads out.]
Back in Lab 47, Sydney studies the devise. The prongs she unlatched on the first device are the size of columns on this device. Two guards run into the lab yelling and aiming their weapons at Syd. Sydney finds a suitable spot on the prong to attach the explosive and runs out of the room. One of the guards spots the explosive and yells. The explosive detonates and the guards fly into the air from the force of it. Sydney is still running. The red ball bursts. The liquid inside the red ball rushes out. Sydney continues running.
Vaughn runs into a hallway and stops. He sees Sydney running and behind her a wall of rushing water-like liquid. Sydney motions for him to run. He hesitates, processing what he is seeing. She finally approaches him, grabs him and tries to shake him into movement. She then runs off. He takes one last look at the rushing liquid and runs behind her.
They turn into a hallway and see a door sliding closed. Sydney just barely clears the door, but Vaughn is not able to catch up. She tries to hold the door open with her bare hands, but is unsuccessful. The door closes and Vaughn is trapped on the wrong side. They helplessly look at each other through a window in the door. Vaughn turns to see the liquid rushing ever closer behind him. He casts one last look at Sydney through the glass and is then slammed against the door by the rushing liquid. Sydney flinches and scrambles to grab a fire extinquisher. She ferociously tries to break the window but cannot. We see Vaughn floating on the other side, looking at Sydney through the window. He shakes his head "no" and motions for her to leave. Sydney ignores him and is still trying to break the glass. Vaughn again mouths the word "no," as Sydney continues helplessly pounding on the window with the fire extinquisher. She is not going to break that window and she knows it. We can see Vaughn sort of float or swim off to the side and out of sight just before Sydney is grabbed from behind by a guard. She elbows the guard off of her, and looks again at the window. Vaughn cannot be seen. Sydney is then smacked in the face with the butt of a gun by someone off camera.
