2.14 Double Agent

February 2, 2003

Thanks to Susan and Lori at Vartanetc. Used with permission.

[The story opens in a hotel room in Berlin. We see a blond woman in bed with a man next to her. She turns to look at him and tells him that they should go back to Fiji when they are done. The man agrees, saying that it would be great to go back. He bends down to kiss her, but she responds with little emotion. He then gets out of bed and heads into the bathroom to take a shower. Once he's out of the room, the woman rushes out of the bed and turns on a laptop computer. She types in the message: "ABORT OPERATION: CONFIRMATION. The scene cuts briefly to the bathroom: the shower is running but empty. Back at the laptop, the woman types: "Lennox is a . . . . . . ." when she hears a door creak. She grabs her pistol and cautiously searches the hotel room. She opens the bathroom door then begins to turn around. Lennox is standing behind her and knocks her out. We then see Lennox sitting on the bed making a phone call. The voice on the phone tells Lennox he is early. Lennox responds that he has been compromised. The voice asks how. Lennox tells him it was something he said and asks how to handle it. Next, we see Sloane on the phone. Sloane tells Lennox to use the woman to send a message and make it public. Lennox hangs up.]

Setting: The remains of the SD-6 offices. Agents are moving about collecting evidence and picking up the pieces. In the middle of it all, Sydney stands and observes, still trying to absorb it. Vaughn enters and walks up to her.
Vaughn: (smiling) I heard you were here.
[Sydney turns to face him and smiles.]
Sydney: I couldn't sleep. I was afraid I'd wake up and find out this was a dream. I went for a run to clear my mind. I ended up here. Any word on Dixon or Marshall?
Vaughn: They'll be in debrief for a while. Meanwhile, Sloane's been put on Interpol's most wanted list.
[Sydney nods. She then closes her eyes and drops her head briefly.]
Sydney: About last night. . . .
Vaughn: Is this going to be about Alice?
Sydney: I know it's complicated . . . . .
Vaughn: We're not together anymore.
Sydney: Since when?
Vaughn: Since this morning. The truth is, we've been over for a long time.
[Sydney's face beams; Vaughn smiles back at her.]
Sydney: I was thinking, I can actually go to the CIA through the front door.
Vaughn: And I can actually give you a ride.

[The scene changes to a busy street in Berlin. A van comes screeching around a corner and the woman from the hotel room is thrown out on to the pavement. She is wrapped in a blanket of explosives. - The scene changes to the CIA ops center. Weiss walks up to Jack, Sydney, Vaughn, and Kendall and introduces them to a young blonde woman, Christine Phillips, a new clandestine services graduate. Weiss tells them that she's been approved by Langley to observe their operations over the few months. - Back in Berlin, security personnel move into position around the woman. - The scene returns to the ops center, where a network feed displays the event on several monitors. Upon seeing the woman, Sydney, Jack, and Vaughn identify her as Agent Emma Wallace, one of their own operatives. Jack tells Kendall that Wallace appears to be wrapped up in C-4 explosives which, if wired with a remote trigger, could be detonated by any radio communication. - The scene cuts to a phone booth in Berlin. After activating a remote trigger, a man resembling Lennox speaks into the phone. He tells Emma to do exactly what he told her to do and she'll be fine. - Back at the ops center, Kendall requests to be patched into the Federal office in Berlin and confirms with Sydney that she can speak German. As instructed by Kendall, Sydney gets on the phone and requests to be put through to the ranking agent on site. Back in Berlin, Emma slowly begins singing verses of "Pop Goes the Weasel," each time, pausing in fear on the word "pop." - Back at the ops center, Sydney is put through to an agent on site and tells him to shut down all radio communication. The agent informs that they have already gone radio silent. The camera cuts to Emma, who, in sheer terror, sings "pop." The camera cuts to Lennox in the phone booth; he detonates the explosives Emma is bound in. - Back at the ops center, Sydney and the group stand silent and shocked; the new girl runs off crying.]

[Scene cuts to a CIA conference room. Kendall is addressing a group of agents including Sydney, Vaughn, and Jack. He explains that Agent Wallace was on a deep cover assignment. Her objective was to gain the trust of a Dr. Renzo Markovic, a former R&D scientist who is developing a new classified technology under the name of Project Helix, bids for which have been received from terrorist organizations. Kendall adds that she was sent undercover with a fellow operative, whom they now presume to be captured or dead. Jack comments that the last satellite transmission from Wallace's partner indicated that he was heading to Cayo Concha off the coast of the Dominican Republic and that Markovic leases a floor at the Sareno Del Sol resort where he conducts his research. Jack concludes that if her partner is still alive, he is being held there. Kendall assigns Sydney and Vaughn to the mission and tells them their objective is two-fold: acquire as much information as possible on Project Helix and bring their operative home. Kendall identifies the operative as James Lennox and hands Sydney Lennox's file.]

Setting: Sydney and Francie's apartment. The doorbell rings and Sydney opens the door to Vaughn who has come by to pick her up for their mission; they both have beaming smiles.
Vaughn: Hi.
Sydney: Hi.
Vaughn: Ready to go?
Sydney: Yeah. Come on in, I'll get my stuff.
[Sydney walks over to a barstool at her kitchen counter and puts her coat on. Vaughn stands nearby, looking around at the apartment.]
Vaughn: Nice place.
Sydney: I'm gonna get a new couch.
Vaughn: Yeah?
Sydney: Well, I don't know...
Vaughn: So this is where you live.
[Sydney walks up to Vaughn and stands next him.]
Sydney: This is where I live.
Vaughn: I love it.
Sydney: I'm ready.
[Vaughn leans over and kisses her. He then pulls himself away, knowing full well that if he doesn't, they will never leave the apartment]
Vaughn: (smiling) Okay, we, um... we should go right now.
[Sydney smiles]
Francie: Hey.
Sydney: Francie, this is Michael... from the bank.
Vaughn: Hey, Francie. Nice to meet you.
[He shakes her hand.]
Francie: Nice to put a face with the name.
Vaughn: Same here.
[Sydney, standing behind Vaughn and acting giddy, points to him and mouths "This is him!" She gets no reaction from Francie. Vaughn turns and looks at Sydney.]
Sydney: We should get to our plane.
Francie: Another business trip?
Sydney: Just a finance conference in New York. Just overnight.
Francie: (smiling) Well, have a good trip, you guys.
Vaughn: Thanks. It's nice to meet you.
[He shakes her hand again.]
Francie: You, too.
Vaughn: Bye.
[Sydney looks at Francie, a little perplexed.]
Francie: I'll see you later.
[Sydney continues looking back at Francie with a stumped look on her face as she follows Vaughn out. Once they leave, Francie's fake smile disappears.]

[Scene changes to Cayo Concha. Sydney, wearing a bikini, steps out of a pool and into a pair of pumps. She picks up a towel and she dries off. As she does so, she looks over at a man sitting nearby who is eyeing her. The man is Arden Jezek. The scene briefly cuts to a plane enroute to Cayo Concha. Sydney and Vaughn are reviewing the mission.]
Vaughn: Arden Jezek. He's Markovic's chief of security at the resort which means he's got access to Project Helix and probably knows where Lennox is being held.
Sydney: Why aren't we going after Markovic directly?
Vaughn: Our surveillance teams say they lost track of him four weeks ago. Jezek's our best shot.
[Back at the pool in Cayo Concha, Sydney smiles at Jezek to bait his attention. She places a wrap around her waist and heads into a changing tent. Jezek gets up and starts following her. As she enters the tent, Sydney slips off her top. Jezek enters the tent, expecting to see Sydney. Instead, he is greeted by Vaughn.]
Vaughn: Hi.
[Sydney, with her top back on, comes out from behind a curtain and forces Jezek down on a table, twisting his arm back. Vaughn injects a syringe into Jezek's neck.]
Vaughn: I've injected you with a cardio toxin. You'll have a heart attack within the hour unless you do exactly as we say. Then you get the antidote. Are we clear?
Jezek: Yeah.
Sydney: Is Agent Lennox still alive?
Jezek: Yes!
Sydney: Where is he?
Jezek: Sublevel, room 47.
[Sydney and Vaughn look at each other]
Sydney: You'll escort us down there and you will help my partner download everything you have on Project Helix.
[In an elevator heading down to room 47, Sydney is wearing a blond wig and stands next to Jezek and Vaughn. As the doors begin to open, she looks at Jezek.]
Sydney: Smile.
[They walk out of the elevator and stop at the guard station.]
Jezek: Uh, they are with me.
[The guard nods. The three walk down a hallway, where Jezek swipes his access card. They turn a corner and continue walking.]
Sydney: (to Vaughn) I'll see you at the exit point.
Vaughn: Yeah.
[Vaughn and Jezek go into one room and Sydney continues walking, looking for room forty-seven. She grabs a lab coat off the wall and enters a room.]
[Scene flashes back to Sydney and Vaughn on the plane.]
Vaughn: Sydney, if Agent Lennox is still alive, he may have undergone psychological reconditioning. You could be walking into a trap.
[Sydney cautiously enter 47 in search of Lennox. Behind a curtain, Lennox is strapped to a chair with two men standing on either side of him. A machine with two protruding needles is aligned with Lennox' eyes. A man standing next to Lennox gives him another opportunity to "talk." Lennox insists he's told them everything he knows. The man proceeds to turn the machine on and the needles move within inches of puncturing Lennox' eyes. Sydney intercepts and knocks out the two men. She races over to Lennox, turns off the machine, and tells him she is there to take him home. Lennox tells her he cannot see. Sydney discovers that they have used a photo-reactive acid on his eyes and proceeds to wrap a bandage around his head to cover his eyes. She tells him not to remove the bandage, that he will otherwise go permanently blind.- Scene cuts to a computer room. Jezek is sitting in front of a computer, with Vaughn standing nearby.]
Vaughn: You're sweating because the poison is taking effect. Type and you'll be fine.
[Jezek continues typing.]
Jezek: Okay, you're in the system.
[Vaughn knocks him out and injects him with an anecdote. Vaughn then sits down at the computer and begins downloading files. - The scene cuts back to Sydney and a nearly blind Lennox who disable two guards and proceed to meet Vaughn at the exit point. - The scene cuts to a plane enroute back to L.A. Sydney sits next to Lennox on a couch and places drops in his eyes. Vaughn enters the room. Sydney tells Lennox his eyes should normalize momentarily, then walks up to Vaughn.]
Vaughn: You okay?
[Sydney nods and looks back at Lennox]
Sydney: What do you think?
Vaughn: (glancing at Lennox) No signs of any post-traumatic stress disorder or symptoms of behavior modification.
Sydney: He was holding his own with the interrogators and he risked losing his sight to get us out.
Vaughn: (subtly shaking his head) I don't know
Sydney: (glancing back Lennox) We'll know more after the psych eval.
[Vaughn subtly smiles and leaves the room. Sydney walks back over to Lennox and asks how he's doing. Lennox swears that she was a blonde. Sydney confirms that she did have a blond wig on, but that she's really brunette and comments that it's hard to keep track. Lennox tells her it's nice to see the face of the person who saved his life and then inquires about Emma's whereabouts. Reluctantly, Sydney tells Lennox that Emma is dead.]

[Back at the CIA, Lennox is brought in for a debriefing. Kendall, Jack, Sydney, and Vaughn are all present. Kendall and Jack question Lennox on how he and Agent Wallace infiltrated Markovic's organization and ask him to explain the circumstances of his capture. Lennox complies, after which, Kendall inquires if has any idea how Wallace was compromised; Lennox replies no. As Kendall concludes the briefing, he informs Lennox that he will be taken to nearby safehouse and asks him if there are any last details he would like to add. Lennox announces he and Agent Wallace were engaged. Sydney and Vaughn look at each other.]

Setting: CIA ops center. Weiss stands alongside Christine, the clandestine services graduate, reviewing the film footage of the bombing. He then attempts to ask her out but she replies that she has a boyfriend; Weiss jokingly responds that he does as well. We then see Vaughn standing at a distance.
Vaughn: Hey Weiss.
[Weiss excuses himself and walks over to Vaughn]
Weiss: I think the new girl has a thing for me.
Vaughn: (completely ignoring Weiss's comment) I was going over Agent Wallace's contact log. She phoned in every two days like clockwork. I mean, the slightest discrepancy in protocol and she contacted us for verification.
Weiss: Your point being. . . . .
Vaughn: The day Lennox says he was captured, we have no records of anything from her. No warnings, no extraction request, nothing. Why didn't she make contact?
[Christine calls Weiss over and has him look at the footage again. Vaughn leaves. She points out a flash of static preceding the blast. She comments that an RF transmitter could account for the interference but all radio signals were shut off. Weiss has the tape rewound and reviews it again. They conclude that the signal that interrupted the feed had to come from the triggerman's detonator, which would place him within a block of the camera. Weiss instructs her to find out where the news van was parked and to locate all of the ATMs and traffic cams in the area in the hopes of catching the triggerman's face on camera.]

[The scene changes to the CIA safehouse where Lennox is staying. Sydney arrives with some groceries. She finds Lennox sitting at the dining room drinking a bottle of liquor and grieving over Emma's death. Lennox stands up and starts commenting how Emma used to say that she spent so much time pretending to be other people, she was afraid she would disappear. Sydney tells Lennox that she lost her fiance as well, and although they have been trained to compartmentalize their feelings, she has not been able to do it. She goes on to say that as much as it hurts, she would rather feel the pain than not feel anything at all. As Sydney takes the bottle of liquor away from him, Lennox startles her with a kiss her; Sydney does not respond. Lennox realizes he made a mistake and backs away her, apologizing. Suddenly, two federal agents walk in the front door and call for Sydney and Lennox. Upon entering the living room, one of the agents orders Lennox to back up against the wall. Lennox begins fighting with them and disables them long enough to get hold of a gun. He orders them not to move and tells Sydney to run. As Sydney walks toward the door, she intentionally trips Lennox. He falls to the floor, giving the two agents an opportunity to handcuff him. Sydney asks what's going on. They reply that Lennox is being placed into federal custody. Sydney is bewildered.]

Setting: CIA ops center, Sydney meets up with Jack and Vaughn.
Sydney: What's going on?
Jack: We've decrypted the specs on Project Helix you and Vaughn obtained. The data describes a breakthrough in next generation molecular gene therapy. It refers to a new procedure whereby a patient's face and body are reshaped to identically resemble someone else. Agent Lennox was the first test subject to be doubled.
[Sydney, in confusion, looks over at Vaughn then back at Jack.]
Sydney: Doubled how? Like cloning?
Jack: Not exactly.
Sydney: So you're saying the man we rescued isn't Agent Lennox?
Jack: It's possible.
Sydney: So who is he?
Jack: Based on our intel, the procedure's first recipient was the man who created the technology, Dr. Markovic.
Sydney: (adamantly) There is no way that the man we have in custody is Dr. Markovic.
Vaughn: I know it sounds insane but as we were analyzing the news footage, Phillips noticed the interference of an RF signal, which helped narrow our search. We got this from a traffic camera.
[Vaughn brings up the traffic cam footage on a monitor. The footage shows Lennox in a phone booth. The computer searches a facial recognition database and finds a match. The program displays Lennox's CIA profile.]

[The scene then changes to a CIA briefing room. Sydney, Jack, Vaughn, and Kendall are present. Jack explains that it has been common for terrorists to employ men who look like them, decoys, to mislead intelligence agencies. Markovic's new procedure would simplify the decoy process. Kendall comments that is not something they want advertised on the black market. Sydney questions Jack how the procedure is done without scarring. Jack replies that it is not a surgical procedure, but rather, the genetic code is altered to reshape their physical attributes. He adds that it's not clear if it's reversible. He goes on to explain that the procedure is only effective on people of a certain genetic disposition and the recipient must be induced into a comatose state for several days while their cells regenerate. The only way to distinguish the real person from the double is by an ocular scan; a flaw in the iris was deliberately built into the procedure to differentiate between the two. Kendall then comments that even if Lennox is who he says he is, there's way to guarantee that he's not the man in the news footage. Sydney responds that the man they rescued just had his life destroyed and that he's on their side. The scene cuts to Lennox who is submitting to an ocular scan. We then see his profile come up on a computer screen. The technician administering the scan walks out of the room and tells Sydney that Lennox is who he says he is. Following the procedure, Lennox meets with Sydney in another room. Sydney tells him about Project Helix and the fact that he has been doubled, thereby explaining the need for the ocular scan. Lennox is stunned by the news. Sydney tells him that Markovic is the one who stole his identity. Sydney then tells him that Markovic has moved the prototype to a freight train in Poland and that she has been assigned to locate it, download the schematics, and destroy it. Lennox insists on going with her.]

Setting: A freight yard in Poland. Sydney and Lennox cross several railroad tracks and approach some freight cars.]
Sydney: (via an audio link) This is mountaineer. We're in position in the train yard.
[The scene flashes to the CIA ops center]
Vaughn: (via a headset) Copy Mountaineer, we've got you on satellite. Reading five guards.
[Weiss sits in front of a computer monitor displaying satellite imagery of the train yard. Five white dots pinpoint the locations of the guards.]
Vaughn: (Voiceover) One on the north side of track two.
[Guard #1 lights up a cigarette; Sydney ambushes him from behind]
Vaughn: (Voiceover) One on the southern perimeter.
[Lennox takes out guard #2]
Vaughn: (Voiceover) One of top of the 2nd car.
[Lennox takes out guard #3. The camera cuts to a fifth guard to disappears between the freight cars.]
Vaughn: Wait, we just lost the last guard. Hold while we reacquire his signal.
[Vaughn stays focused on the satellite imagery. The camera cuts back to the train yard where Sydney finds and shoots the fifth guard. Sydney and Lennox head to the car containing the prototype. They trip the combination lock on the door and enter the freight car. Sydney prepares to rig the explosives while Lennox downloads the prototype schematics. Lennox sits down in front of a computer and accesses the data log. Scene cuts back to CIA ops center, where Weiss and Vaughn are standing by to receive the schematics. Scene cuts back to the Sydney and Lennox. As Sydney is setting the remote trigger, Lennox states that, according to the data, the sequencer has been used twice, that he is not the only one that was doubled. A stunned Sydney inquires who the other double is but the data does not reveal the information. The scene then cuts to Sydney's apartment, where "Francie" suspiciously looks over her shoulder and then replaces a panel on the bottom of the T.V. set. The scene cuts back to the ops center.]
Female Agent: Agent Vaughn, a call was routed through the PBX you need to take right away.
[Vaughn acknowledges her and hits the speaker button on the phone]
Vaughn: Who am I talking to?
[The scene cuts to Lennox #2 driving in a jeep and talking on a cell phone]
Lennox #2: My name is James Lennox.
[Vaughn looks over Jack]
Lennox #2: The man you rescued is Dr. Renzo Markovic. I know that sounds impossible. He's developed some kind of genetic doubling prototype.
Vaughn: Yes, we know that.
Lennox #2: I was captured trying to infiltrate his medical lab on Concho Caya. They knew the CIA would send in a team after me and they set you up. I just escaped 12 hours ago while they were trying to transport me off the island.
Vaughn: Where are you now?
Lennox #2: I'm in Poland.
[Kendall and Jack look concerned]
Lennox #2: I've tracked the prototype to a freight yard here. I'm going to destroy it.
[Weiss sits down in front of the computer and confirms the location of Lennox #2 on the satellite imagery. The mute button is pushed on the phone.]
Jack: It could be Markovic. One of the guards may have alerted him and he's now trying to prevent us from sabotaging the prototype.
Kendall: There's now way to be certain.
[Vaughn turns the speaker button back on]
Vaughn: (speaking to the Lennox #2) I'd like to believe you but we just conducted a test confirming Lennox's identity.
Lennox #2: The ocular scan. . . .the ocular scan doesn't work. That was disinformation he wanted you to download so you would trust him.
[Vaughn looks over at Jack]
Lennox #2: The ocular scan is a joke.
Jack: (speaking to the Lennox #2) Listen carefully. Do not approach the train yard.
Lennox #2: I'm losing you. . . . .I can't hear you
[His voice breaks up over the speakerphone]
Lennox #2: Hello. . . . . I'm losing you. . . . . . hello
[The camera cuts to Vaughn who has worry written across his face. The scene cuts to the train yard. Lennox #2 pulls up in his jeep. He grabs his gun and runs toward the freight cars. The scene cuts back to the ops center.]
Vaughn: (speaking to a fellow agent) Put me through to Sydney on a separate channel. I only want her to hear this.
Agent: Got it.
Vaughn: Sydney, listen, don't react. Don't take your eyes off the man you're with. We just got a call from someone claiming to be the real James Lennox. He's on his way to you now. It looks like he's alone. Clear your throat if you copy.
[Sydney clears her throat. Jack tells Sydney that there's no way to verify the identity of either man. He instructs her to disarm both men and lead them to the extraction point. Sydney disarms Lennox #1, who handcuffs himself to a handrail. Via her comm link to the ops center, she inquires about the location of Lennox #2.]
[Scene briefly cuts to Vaughn at the ops center.]
Vaughn: Cloud cover has moved in over your position. We're blind but he's got to be right there.
[Scene cuts back to the freight car. Lennox #1 tells pleads with Sydney to believe him when he tells her that Lennox #2 is Markovic and will not hesitate to kill her. Sydney goes looking for Lennox #2; meanwhile, Lennox #1 struggles to free himself from the handcuffs. As Lennox #2 scours the freight cars for Lennox #1, Sydney catches him from behind and repeatedly orders him to drop his gun or she'll shoot. In the meantime, Lennox #1 breaks free and goes looking for Sydney. The two Lennoxes end up in a stand-off, guns pointed at each other. Sydney orders them not to drop their guns. She drops hers and pulls out the remote trigger. She tells Markovic that she hopes she likes his face because he will have it for a long time. As she moves to detonate the explosives, Lennox #2 points his guns at Sydney. Sydney detonates the explosives. At the same moment, Lennox #1 shoots and kills Lennox #2. Sydney and the real James Lennox return home to L.A. Scene cuts back to the ops center. Lennox, who has been granted a leave of absence, tells Sydney that he is taking a trip to Fiji, which is where Emma and he had planned to go on their honeymoon. Sydney tries to comfort Lennox by saying that she was lucky to have known her fiance for as long as she did. Lennox, touched by her remark, thanks her and walks away.]

The scene changes to Sydney's kitchen. As Sydney moves about the kitchen making dinner, Vaughn, standing against the kitchen counter, watches her with longing his eyes. As Sydney turns off the stove and opens the oven door, Vaughn takes hold of her arm and pulls her to him. They embrace and kiss. Between kisses, Vaughn whispers to her:
Vaughn: You're so beautiful.
Sydney: (gazing into his eyes) Dinner's ready.
Vaughn: (grinning) You've got an oven, you know . . . . . we can reheat.
[They both smile and continue kissing as Sydney kicks the oven door shut with her foot. The scene then changes to Sydney's bedroom where they continue kissing and share a night of intimacy. The camera then cuts to the T.V. set in the bedroom. The screen shows a reflection of the two of them in bed and the camera focuses in on the bottom panel of the set. We then see a computer monitor in a darkened room with the same view of Vaughn and Sydney in bed. "Francie," with a chillingly evil look on her face, watches the monitor as Sydney and Vaughn make love.]
